Increasingly, issues become more and more complicated. Take the environment, for example. Should we address global warming through reduced carbon emissions or carbon absorption protocols? Should we reduce emissions through reduced energy consumption or through increased alternate power generation? What kind of national and global long-term fossil fuel management strategy do we need to wean ourselves from oil as we gradually deplete the world's reserves?

.

This is just one issue, and we haven't even scratched the surface of it. There are thousands more issues as complicated and as massive as this one, such as health care, foreign relations, trade subsidies, abortion, intelligent design, and on and on and on.

.

There are four cornerstones in a democracy:

  • The right to speak and associate freely;
  • The right to access information without unnecessary government control and censorship, including freedom of the press, and now freedom of the internet;
  • Honest, stable, and effective legislative, administrative, judicial, and security infrastructures; and
  • The right to vote freely

.

In a democracy, we have the privilege to enjoy these cornerstones. But democracy is not free - it requires informed citizens. Let me answer your question with a question: How can you ever hope to cast a meaningful ballot in an election if you cannot begin to understand the simplest and most basic of current events surrounding these and other important issues?

.

As citizens, we are expected to vote in favor of the candidate and/or party that we believe will best protect and improve these cornerstones for the benefit of ourselves and for our communities. Educating ourselves about what goes on around us is the only way we can formulate such an informed position. Following current events is the price we must each pay to sustain a thriving democracy.
