Quick answer: the same reason some other people are straight. It's "built in" to who we are.

Actually, only a very few people are exclusively gay, with no psychological or physiological response to the opposite sex. A lot of people have occasional homosexual impulses, even though most of us don't actually "do" anything. This happens not only among humans, but has been observed in almost every species.

Homosexuality apparently has some biological, social or emotional value. For example, scientists have observed an increase in homosexual behavior among rats when their enclosure becomes too crowded, even if there is ample food and water. So homosexuality could be a form of natural Birth Control.

Likewise, homosexual feelings may be related to intense friendship of the sort that leads us to risk our own life to protect our friend's.
