It is mainly due to illiteracy. Many people think the greater their number of children the greater their generation becomes. Others, in order to have son give birth to large number of children, because according to them if they don't get a son then their generation will be doomed.

Basically it is very simple: if there are more births than deaths population size rises.

examples

Poverty: more children means more chances that one of them survives. More children are seen as an insurance for old people. They can take care of their parents in the future.

Improved health care: By improving health, humans tend to live longer.

Education: people who are educated tend to have kids later in life, which somewhat is a brake on population growth. If people have children on an early age, and their children also and so on, then this means a rise in population growth.
