Until now, north Indiawas regarded as the main centre of sugar industry.Uttar Pradesh alone accounts for half of the sugar mills of India. But recently, there is a tendency to shift the sugar industry towards South India. It is primarily due to following reasons:

  1. It has been found by experiments that sugarcane produced in the south has more sugar content than the sugarcane produced in the north.
  2. Sugar is a seasonal industry which can be run better in the co-operative sector rather than in the private sector. It is a known fact that the co-operative movement has proved more successful in the south than in the north.
  3. Many states of the south like Maharashtra, Andhra pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have recently begun to pay more attention to the cultivation of sugarcane.
  4. Sugar is also an export-item and helps in earning the foreign exchange. South has better port facilities for exports as compared to the north.
