South Africa is a very diverse country. There are 11 official languages!

  • The largest group are the black South Africans (Zulus, Xhosas, Sothos, Tswanas etc, etc)
  • The Whites who are generally separated into two main groups - the English speakers (decended from the British settlers) and Afrikaners (decended from the Dutch, French & German settlers)
  • The Indians who were brough here to work in the sugar cane fields (SA has the largest group of traditional Indians outside India)
  • The "coloureds" (mix race people) descendants of dutch, khoisan, black and slaves from Indonesia and Malasia

The smaller groups consist of people from the rest of Africa, the portugese, Italians and a smallish Jewish community
