It really depends on your income and lifestyle (New York City is a lot more expensive than some small rural towns). And are you talking about ALL the groceries (which include things other than food, like personal care products, household cleansers, pet supplies, etc.)? Do you entertain frequently? Are you including alcohol in the tally? Is she a shopper who feels the need to stockpile lots of cans and boxes to make sure you don't run out of anything? Are you including your dining out expenses (even Starbucks can add up). $3000 does sound high for three people. We have a family of five and live in a fairly affluent area and I'd guess my "big" shop each week runs about $250. Then there are all the little trips to get just one thing where I end up spending $25 here, $50 there. So I'd guess our grocery bill for a month is at most $2000 per month. At the rate she's spending, your family is eating about $100 a day in meals. I understand why this would make you unhappy, but if her spending is that out of control, odds are she's unhappy about something too.
My wife is spending 3,000 dollars a month and I am unhappy.
Last year U.S. households spent $3,240 on average for groceries http://www.cccsatl.org/save-money-grocery.asp $100 to $150 most weeeks & $200 on big ticket item weeks (i.e Laudry soap, dog food...)

It would be very difficult to know this. Most people of those times did not have a monthly income they lived by growing their own food or by trading goods.
it depends on what dog food. My 10lb chihuahua eats about 1/2 a cup of food a day figure out how much you are paying for a bag and how many cups are in it.
By estimating, I would say about $300 a month would be the cost of food for a family of 3 per month.
