Answer

The colonial powers had better technology, scientific knowledge, and military power. The nations they encountered in Africa were primitive by comparison. These explorers assumed the savage state of African nations was due to intellectual inferiority. Humans make thousands of wrong assumptions everyday why should this one be special.

Answer

In addition to feeling scientifically and socially superior, there was an economic factors involved in promoting the view that black people were somehow lesser forms of human. Using language and social comparisons to promote that idea and ignoring the skills and abilities of black populations, such as African or Australian, to survive and thrive in harsh natural conditions as being a valid scientific strategy. In addition to the slave trade, whites felt that the resources of areas inhabited by such native populations should belong to their superior development abilities. Again ignoring the wisdom of the native populations to utilize their resources to support themselves without destroying them. In addition to taking many decades to overcome the social inequities of race, white people are only now becoming aware how horrendously harmful their arrogance was.
