Aztec Peak is really just a rounded hill partially covered with trees, and it's not easily recognizable from a distance. There are many trails, roads, and campgrounds in the Sierra Ancha Mountains. With a prominence of 2,468', Aztec Peak is big enough to make an appearance on the Arizona Prominence Map.

Legends say that the Aztecs were sent a message from the gods that the place that they should settle was where they would see a snake and and eagle fighting on a water cactus, which is the picture depicted on the Mexico flag. This place ended up being Lake Texcoco, where Tenochtitlan was born.
