Do bats chirp?

While most people know bats bounce sound waves too high for people to hear off of objects (even ones as small as mosquitoes) to "see" in the dark (sonar), few people know that bats create sounds we can hear.

So YES, they do chirp- very loudly. Just ask anybody who has bats in their attic. It sounds like baby birds, lots of baby birds. They chirp socially while they are roosting to communicate with the rest of the colony. One thing that might set the whole colony chirping is approaching danger. In other words, that bat in the eave of your house that chirps when you get near it during the day isn't asking for you to help get it out- it's screaming to everybody else to watch out because there's some giant two-legged monster coming!

Also, RABID BATS DON'T ATTACK! Bats get paralytic rabies, not aggressive rabies (the 0.5 % that even get rabies, that is).

Get rid of your mosquitoes the natural way! Build a Bat House!

Do bats use their thumbs to hang upside down?

The main reason bats stay up high is to avoid predators. Bats evolved special feet and joints that make it easy for them to hang that way for a long time, even while sleeping. Hanging from high tree branches or cave ceilings makes the bats difficult to reach, so being upside down means staying alive!

The bats babies are called?

Bat young are called pups. Most bat females have one to two pups per year, and they feed them from two teats, much the same as humans do. Bat pups have special milk teeth and talons they are born with that are necessary so the babies can hang on to their mothers as they feed. The mothers can fly with the young before the pups become too large, but most mothers will leave their babies in a nursery and fly back to them after feeding.

Pups are all altricial, and their eyes open a few days after being born. After about two weeks, the pups have a full soft layer of fur. They will not commonly be of reproductive age until at least a year after they are born.

The western and eastern red bats of North America are known for having the most pups of any species, up to four, though there has been a record case of five. This species' mother will raise the pups among foliage all alone. If disturbed, she might abandon the pups that cannot cling to her, so having this many of them can often backfire, resulting in orphans or simply malnourished young.

In South America, the Vampyrum spectrum bat, the largest Microbat of all, will have up to three pups at a time, though three is rare. In this species, the male plays the uncommon role of sharing parental responsibility with the female. Also unlike many other species of bats, the family of Vampyrum spectrum is normally limited to the mother, father and current pups, the male protectively enfolding the family in its wings.

.

You can't confuse quality and function like that. All animals (including us) hear as they do, and as well as they need to do, for the life they lead in nature, so have a hearing band-width and sensitivity to suit. Ours is 20Hz - 20kHz, at most; with a maximum useful sound-pressure range of under 100dB re 20µPa.

.

Of cats and bats, I do not know which of the two animals has the more acute hearing, but I would think it is the cat as it has larger ears even if its frequency range and band-width are lower than the bat's. Yes, the bat has to detect and analyse extremely low sound pressure levels in the echoes of its chirps, when hunting by echo-location, but that does not make it better hearing by frequency.

.

Acuity, or sensitivity to level, in animals varies with frequency to some extent within each specie's band-width, but level is not a measure of frequency.

Scientific name for the dark flying fox?

Most fox species belong to the red fox group, genus Vulpes. The common red fox, Vulpes vulpes, is found in Eurasia, N Africa, and North America. It is hunted for its valuable fur and, especially in England, for sport. An extremely wary animal, it is skilled at evading traps and dodging pursuers. There are many local varieties; European red foxes are larger than those of North America, which average about 23 in. (58 cm) in body length, stand about 16 in. (41 cm) at the shoulder, and weigh about 5 to 10 lb (2.3-4.6 kg). North American red foxes inhabit areas of forest mixed with open country, from the Arctic Ocean to the S United States. Although most active at night, they are also seen by day. Coat color varies, but the tail is always tipped with white, and the legs, feet, and tips of the ears are always black. The rest of the coat is commonly reddish; black, silver, and cross (reddish, with a dark, cross-shaped region on back and shoulders) are among variations that may appear in any red fox litter. Silver fox pelts, black with white-tipped outer hairs, are much in demand; many are derived from animals raised on fox farms. From the silver fox, breeders have developed a platinum fox, whose pale gray pelt is highly valued, and (in Siberia) a tame, domesticated breed.

The kit and swift foxes (V. velox and V. macrotis, respectively) are small, swift, pale gray or yellowish foxes, found on the deserts and plains of the W United States and N Mexico. Their numbers have been greatly diminished by trapping and poisoning, and they are now rare in many parts of their range. Other Vulpesspecies are found in Asia and Africa.

The gray fox, Urocyon cinereoargenteus, is a New World species; it is the only fox that sometimes climbs trees. Found from the N United States to N South America, this fox is slightly larger, on the average, than the North American red fox. Its coat is salt-and-pepper above and buff-colored below; the upper side of its tail is black. Gray foxes inhabit woods, swamps, and brushy areas that afford them cover; they are more retiring and more strictly nocturnal in their habits than red foxes. Their fur is of little value.

The arctic fox, Alopex lagopus, is found on arctic coasts and islands; it has a circumpolar distribution. Characterized by short, rounded ears and heavily furred feet, all arctic foxes are brown to gray in summer; some turn pure white in winter, while others, called blue foxes, turn bluish gray. The blue fox, a natural variant that is more common in some areas than in others, is highly valued for its pelt, and breeders have developed all-blue strains. Although their diet includes small animals and plant matter, arctic foxes are chiefly scavengers, feeding especially on the remains of polar bears' kills.

The smallest fox is the fennec, or desert fox (Fennecus zerda), of the Sahara and Arabian deserts. An excellent burrower, it has enormous ears and a fluffy pale cream coat. Other foxes (sometimes called zorros) are found in South America.

What is the Hearing frequency range for dolphin?

Dolphin sounds are usually within the hearing range of people. Echo location clicks can range up to about 150,000 Hz, that is eight times higher than the normal human hearing range. A lot of these clicks occur at frequencies as low as 2,000 Hz. So people can easily hear them with an underwater microphone, called hydrophone.

Why are insect wings and bird wings similar?

They are actually quite different! An insects wings are a fixed shape and have an ecto-skeleton (like bones) in the outside and look very much like a leaf. Often there are two pairs together which can over-lap. A birds wing has the bones on the inside and they are hollow. The feathers spread open to increase the surface area and aid in giving "lift". There really aren't many similarities at all.
