What would you do if the chest of a victim did not expand while given 'Rescue Breathing?

Check the airway for any possible obstruction. If you're attempting artificial respiration - and the chest wall doesn't rise - there must be an obstruction somewhere !

What is the procedure for CPR?

Check out ProCPR's Free CPR Training Video Library at the related link. There, you'll find high quality video demonstrations for CPR. First determine if the patient has signs of life; open airway head tilt chin lift method. If no signs of life, give 2 breaths. Now it is time to start the CPR cycles. Give 30 compressions, followed by 2 breaths. Repeat 30 compressions / 2 breaths until EMS arrives to take over. Check for pulse.

Give 2 rescue breaths.

Give 30 chest compressions. See related links

How often should you stop and check for signs of life when performing CPR on an infant?

CPR is a continuous cycle of 30 compressions and 2 breaths (assuming on rescuer). Do not stop unless an obvious sign of life is observed, another bystander can take over or when medical help arrives.

How should you give breaths with a mask?

  • Pinch the victim's nose to close nostrils, keeping the airway open by the head-tilt, chin-lift.
  • Take a deep breath and seal your lips around the outside of the victim's mouth, preferably with a CPR barrier mask, creating an airtight seal.
  • Give the victim 2 full breaths (1 second each), taking your lips off the victim's mouth to inhale between each breath.
  • Check for chest rising and falling with each breath you give. The rising of the chest during your exhalations indicates the effectiveness of your breaths.
  • Perform 5 sets of the 30-to-2 cycle within 2 minutes.
  • Continue cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) until an automated external defibrillator (AED) is applied, the person starts to move, help arrives, or until you can no longer continue.

Chances of brain death are likely if the heart stopped for?

Can you perform CPR on someone with chest injuries?

If a person's heart has stopped beating, that person is clinically dead and will remain dead, if resuscitation is not accomplished, therefore ribcage injuries are not a reason to avoid pressing down on the heart to stimulate it and cause blood to resume flowing. If a person has to suffer further injury to the ribcage, in the process of being resuscitated, that may be unavoidable. Just do CPR as normal.

What position should you place an unconscious breathing casualty and why?

If there is no sign of trauma to the head or neck, or other reason to suspect cervical spine injury, place the patient on their left side, knees slightly flexed to help maintain the position. By placing the patient on their side, the tongue is less likely to occlude the airway and blood or secretions can drain freely.

If there is a possibility of cervical spine injury, the head and neck must be held in an in-line neutral position by one person while a second individual helps turn the patient onto their side. The person maintaining c-spine must assure the head and neck remain in line with the rest of the body as it is being turned and then must continue holding the head in a neutral position until the patient can be placed onto their back, and properly immobilized with a cervical collar, cervical immobilization device and long spine board.

Prior to using an AED you should?

When can you stop performing CPR?

As a lay responder, the only times you should stop performing CPR once you have started are:

  • If the victim starts breathing on their own or demonstrates other obvious signs of life
  • You are too exhausted to continue
  • Another trained responder arrives and takes over
  • The scene becomes unsafe
  • In certain jurisdictions, when you are presented with a valid DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) order and you are able to verify that it is valid
  • An AED is attached and ready to be used. After the AED delivers a shock or decides not to shock, immediately resume CPR

As a healthcare provider, all of the above reasons still apply. However, depending on your license and local laws and regulations, you may be able to stop CPR for additional reasons than just the above. Some examples include:

  • Standing protocol authorizes discontinuation after a certain time period or under certain circumstances
  • You are an independent practitioner authorized by your jurisdiction to declare and certify time of death after making a clinical determination that ROSC is unrealistic
  • The patient's verified medical decision maker formally asks for resuscitation efforts to be stopped and such a request is allowed by law.

What are some requirements for a suitable babysitter?

How do i know when air is going in a child's lungs during CPR?

Absolutely not. This all boils down to your primary survey or ABC's (Airway, Breathing, and Circulation). You started performing CPR on the child because they weren't breathing and probably didn't have circulation. When the child starts to breath again on their own, you have to stop what you're doing and re-assess the situation. If they were breathing when you first found them you would not have started CPR in the first place, and the same logic applies now. On another note, you cannot breath if your heart isn't beating, so don't drive yourself nuts deciding whether or not to continue compressions; the answer is no.
