Tobacco was smoked in clay pipes long before the use of paper rolled cigarettes came a long. A guess? Sometime in the 1860's. Cigars also pre-date cigarettes by many years.

Bizet's opera Carmen was written in 1830 and places Carmen as a worker at a cigarette factory. Presumably, this suggests a date earlier than 1860.

The history of Zig-Zag says during the battle of Sevastopol, in which the French fought, a French soldier's clay pipe was broken in battle. He tore a piece of paper from a gunpowder bag and used it to roll the first cigarette.

When Columbus went to America, he saw American Indians smoking in elaborate pipes, or in rolled up leaves. The Indians probably had been smoking long before Columbus saw them. Anyway, Columbus and his men tried it, liked it, and brought some back to England, and got everyone hooked on it. So, at least you know that people have been smoking tobacco since before 1442.

Nicotine is an addictive poisonous alkaloid C 5 H 4 NC 4 H 7 NCH 3 , derived from the tobacco plant. Nicotine is used as an insecticide. Forty milligrams of nicotine has killed an adult (Merck Index). One deep drag on a cigarette can provide 0.35 mg nicotine. Therefore, one cigarette can provide 3.5 mg of nicotine and twenty one cigarettes provide 73.5 mg of nicotine. There is often in excess 250 mg of nicotine in one hundred cigarettes.

I could be reading your explanation in a way you may not have intended, however, I believe you may be combining two facts about nicotine into one definition, when in reality, they have little to do with one another. Yes, in the past, nicotine was widely used as an insecticide due to the fact that it functions as an antiherbivore chemical, with particular specificity to insects. This information refers to the biosynthesis taking place in the roots, and accumulation in the leaves of the dry plant from which it comes. This information has very little to do with the consumption of nicotine in traditional cigarettes. The correct formula for Nicotine is C10 H14 N2. An average cigarette yields about 1-3 mg of absorbed nicotine, although you will see a much higher dosage often stated on the packaging, normally a range of 10-15 mg. This higher dosage is NOT referring to the INHALED ABSORBED amount a smoker will receive once it is burned, and converted to a smoke form capable of being inhaled. Also, you may notice that the nicotine patch is available in its most common dosage, 21mg, however, only approximately 1-2mg of nicotine will actually be absorbed into the bloodstream. There are many factors that are to be considered when assessing the amount of nicotine the body will absorb.
