Dr. Frederick Banting a surgeon from Toronto, Ontario, Canada initially came up with the idea to use insulin in October 1920 and in early 1921 he took his idea to Professor John Macleod of the University of Toronto who provided Banting with a laboratory with little equipment, an assistant named Charles Best and ten dogs to experiment on. In late 1921 biochemist Bertram Collip joined the team with the task of purifying the insulin so they could begin testing on humans. The first person to receive insulin shots was 14 year old Leonard Thompson of Toronto, Ontario, Canada who in January 1922 was near death. However, after he was treated with insulin he quickly recovered his strength and appetite. Then in 1923, Banting and Macleod shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their work with insulin in treating diabetes.

What are the most serious symptoms of type 2 diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes can be fatal the fastest if that is what you are asking, but both are fatal if untreated. Methods of treatment include insulin shots, pancreatic transplant, and pancreatic islet cell transplant.

Type 1 diabetes is when no insulin is produced, and insulin is used to breakdown glucose. A build up glucose can create complications, so it is wise to take the insulin shots and watch your diet. Ketoacidosis can cause cerebral edema, and that is fatal. The brain runs on glucose, and when none of it is processed, the brain relies on fat. The byproducts of fat breakdown is ketone bodies. a build up of it is ketoacidosis, which is indeed fatal.

How does insulin cause the blood glucose level to decrease?

Need more information. Are you a diabetic (if so type 1 or type 2), are you on insulin, are you on medication?

When your blood sugar level drops you are hypoglycemic. You do not need to be a diabetic to have this happen, although it does happen frequently to diabetics. You may feel shaky, nervous, your heart may begin to pound, you may become pale. At this point you need to take a fast acting sugar such as a glucose tab (sugar tablet that you eat) a soda (coke), fruit juice with some added sugar. Wait fifteen minutes and take more if you still are feeling low. After you have stabilized then take about

2 oz. of protein (peanut butter is good). The sugar will bring your blood sugar up within a normal range and then you need the protein to keep you there until your next meal. DO NOT eat chocolate, many have been told to eat a candy bar when having a low sugar reaction but chocolate has fat in it and fat will actually prevent the sugar from entering your blood stream quickly. You need a sugar that will get into your bloodstream quickly.

What does the HBA1C test find?

The HbA1C test finds how much HbA1C is in your blood. A normal non-diabetic has about 3.5-5.5% HbA1C, but 6.5% is good for a diabetic. This is one of the best ways to check whether someone's diabetes is under control.

What is best for a diabetic to eat?
