People become hypnotized when totally absorbed in something to the exclusion of all else. Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state which most people enter spontaneously on a regular basis - eg "daydreaming"; performing a tedious and repetitive task "on autopliot" whilst thinking of something else; being "lost" in a book, movie, piece of music etc..

One may be hypnotized by fascination - eg gazing into the eyes of someone who attracts you, or listening to an interesting speaker.

When someone is hypnotized their mind is very focused, and the right hemisphere of the brain (which deals with emotion, intuition, creativity etc) is dominating their thought processes so they are in a state of heightened suggestibility and imaginative engagement where they'll tend to be less critical/ analytical, and more inclined to be emotively responsive and playful than normal.

A hypnotist simply encourages focused concentration (on voice, and/ or other single stimuli) and relaxation, and thereby guides the person into a dissociated "trance" state in which they don't really care about anything other than what they're being asked to focus on. It's nothing more than deliberate utilization of the normal human capacity to concentrate on something very intensely whilst following instructions.

It depends on what type of trance one is stuck in. Some forms of trance are hypnosis, prayer, meditation and magic. Most of the time the person in said trance can come out of it on their own, some need medical intervention.

You can simply get them to do something that they are really invested in, then simply ask them nicely to do something. If that doesn't work, just make them stare at something for a little while and ask them to do something.
