Who suffers from IBS?

Answer

*Note: Recent research suggests that the nebulous, ill-defined disease that we call IBS is largely psychosomatic. In other words, it is mainly caused by our own mind and/or emotions. Thus, rather than being caused by genetic or dietary problems, the cause of the disease is most likely another vague modern term: "stress." The simple fact is that our modern civilizations and technology divorce us from many of our natural instincts and habits. This causes "stress" which we deal with in different ways. Those of us who are affected by it manifest it in different ways. IBS is a very common reaction in a very large amount of people (as evidenced by how prevalent this affliction is in our modern world).

Researchers have yet to discover any specific cause for IBS. One theory is that people who suffer from IBS have a colon (large bowel) that is particularly sensitive and reactive to certain foods and stress. The immune system, which fights infection, may also be involved.

* Normal motility, or movement, may not be present in a colon of a person who has IBS. It can be spasmodic or can even stop working temporarily. Spasms are sudden strong muscle contractions that come and go.

* The lining of the colon called the epithelium, which is affected by the immune and nervous systems, regulates the flow of fluids in and out of the colon. In IBS, the epithelium appears to work properly. However, when the contents inside the colon move too quickly, the colon looses its ability to absorb fluids. The result is too much fluid in the stool. In other people, the movement inside the colon is too slow, which causes extra fluid to be absorbed. As a result, a person develops constipation.

* A person's colon may respond strongly to stimuli such as certain foods or stress that would not bother most people.

Recent research has reported that serotonin is linked with normal gastrointestinal (GI) functioning. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter, or chemical, that delivers messages from one part of your body to another. Ninety-five percent of the serotonin in your body is located in the GI tract, and the other 5 percent is found in the brain. Cells that line the inside of the bowel work as transporters and carry the serotonin out of the GI tract. People with IBS, however, have diminished receptor activity, causing abnormal levels of serotonin to exist in the GI tract. As a result, people with IBS experience problems with bowel movement, motility, and sensation, having more sensitive pain receptors in their GI tract.

In addition, people with IBS frequently suffer from depression and anxiety, which can worsen symptoms. Similarly, the symptoms associated with IBS can cause a person to feel depressed and anxious.

Researchers have reported that IBS may be caused by a bacterial infection in the gastrointestinal tract. Studies show that people who have had gastroenteritis sometimes develop IBS, otherwise called post-infectious IBS.

Researchers have also found very mild celiac disease in some people with symptoms similar to IBS. People with celiac disease cannot digest gluten, a substance found in wheat, rye, and barley. People with celiac disease cannot eat these foods without becoming very sick because their immune system responds by damaging the small intestine. A blood test can determine whether celiac disease may be present. (For information about celiac disease, see NIDDK's Celiac Disease fact sheet.)

The following have been associated with a worsening of IBS symptoms

* large meals

* bloating from gas in the colon

* medicines

* wheat, rye, barley, chocolate, milk products, or alcohol

* drinks with caffeine, such as coffee, tea, or colas

* stress, conflict, or emotional upsets

Researchers have found that women with IBS may have more symptoms during their menstrual periods, suggesting that reproductive hormones can worsen IBS problems.

In some people abnormal, vigorous contractions of the intestines cause cramping abdominal pains i.e. the muscles of the intestine walls are contracting abnormally.

In other people the intestines are working normally but normal contractions (or gas) are interpreted in the brain as being excessive (known as 'hypervigilance').

Different foods may worsen the symptoms of IBS. It is not known if this is due to an allergic reaction or due to an intolerance (e.g. to diary or sugar).

What should a person do when their hemorrhoids are bleeding?

Rectal bleeding could be a serious health risk and requires medical consultation in most situations. Being on your period shouldn't really affect the treatment of rectal bleeding at all. If it is hemorrhoids you can buy over the counter medication for that which can be used during menstrual cycle. if it is caused by trauma such as anal sex then it should still be checked out to make sure its not too severe but if it is mild and dissipates after a day or two then you should be OK as long as you get checked out in that area every so often to protect you from life threatening injury or illness. If it is an unknown cause it is important to have it checked out right away. It could be caused by something as serious as a tumor or polyp or as simple as constipation or irritable bowl syndrome.

Does the small intestine lead to the rectum?

In the small intestine, the food is digested for the last time in the digestive system. Bile, pancreatic juice and intestinal juice are let into the small intestine when the food enters the small intestine. The bile acid is the greenish liquid that that breaks down the large fat molecule into small fat molecule. The intestinal and pancreatic juice contain protease, carbohydrase and lipase. The pancreatic juice is made in the pancreas and it flows into the small intestine while the intestinal juice is made in the small intestine itself. The protease break down the polypeptide into amino acids, carbohydrase break down maltose into glucose and the lipase will break down the small fat molecule into glycerol and fatty acid. the walls of the small intestine have many blood vessels. Only the simple molecules such as amino acids, glucose, glycerol and fatty acids can be absorbed into the blood vessels. The large molecules such as proteins, polypeptide, carbohydrate, maltose and fats cannot enter the bloodstream as they are too big to be absorbed and so all this big nutrient molecules will be passed on to the large intestine to be disposed off through the anus in the form of faeces. The walls of the small intestine are filled villi which provide a large surface area for the absorption of nutrients to be faster.

Why do your stools smell like tar?

What organs are connected to the small intestine?

The bile ducts connect the liver and the gall bladder to the small intestine.

What comes first liver or small intestine?

small intestine digestion starts in the mouth then the pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, then excreated through the rectum

3 functions of the large intestine?

The 3 main functions of the large intestine are:

1. Water reabsorption

2. Fermentation

3. Storing waste

The small intestine is mostly responsible for digesting and absorbing nutrients. By the time food passes into the large intestine (colon), most nutrients and around 90% of water has already been absorbed. Nevertheless, the large intestine does play an important role in reabsorbing water and in maintaining water balance.

The large intestine is full of bacteria, both good and bad, which ferment undigested food products. Eating certain types of food such as fiber, legumes, wheat, onions and fruit can lead to "excessive" production of gas. The bacteria breakdown these undigested products for their own nourishment. There is also a limited amount of absorption of some vitamins, such as vitamin K.

Finally, the large intestine acts as a conduit or pathway for the passage of waste products from the small intestine to the anus. Removal of the large intestine (colectomy), either partial of total, is generally well tolerated by people with few side effects. There is no significant effect on nutrition, however water re-absorption may be affected and diarrhea can also sometimes occur.

I feel like i have to poop but it feels like there is something blocking it from coming out?

I had the same symptoms, for quite awhile last year, but I also experienced on and off stomach upset, nausea and random pains all over my stomach. One night I got one of the random pains in my stomach, then went to bed. By the next morning I was so sick and in so much pain I could barely move. After about 5 hours of puking and trying to poop, I had to be wheeled into a hospital for emergency surgery. Turns out I had an ovarian cyst that ultimately ruptured and was causing an obstruction in my intestines. Even after the CT scan, I was apparently such a mess inside that they couldn't tell what the heck the problem was, and had to poke three holes in my stomach to eventually discover that my angry ovary was interfering with my digestion. If it persists, get it checked out. Even if you're not female, I'd get checked out, because many things can cause the intestinal track to get blocked. It's not a fun thing to experience.

Is colon cleansing recommended?

Advocates for colon cleansing believe that toxins build up in the stool, sits in our bodies and leads to a variety of health problems such as arthritis, allergies and asthma. They believe that colon cleansing (also called colonic irrigation) will decrease the amount of toxins in our body, promoting healthy intestinal bacteria, boosting your energy and enhancing your immune system. According to the Susan Cohan Kasdas Colon Cancer Foundation, no supporting objective evidence, clinical trials, or any validated scientific information supporting the value of colon cleaners has been found. In his article "Colon Cleansing: is it helpful or harmful?" Michael Picco, M.D. of the Mayo Clinic contends that "many leading experts agree that colon cleansers can do more harm than good to the colon." Although doctors prescribe colon cleansing as preparation for medical procedures such as colonoscopy, most don't recommend it for detoxification. The most basic reason why colon cleansing is not doctor recommended for detoxification is that it is simply unnecessary The human body doesn't need enemas or special diets or pills to eliminate waste material and bacteria. The digestive system and bowel do this naturally. In addition, the colon lining, called the mucosa, gets its nourishment from bacterial products that exist in the stool. Colon cleansing leads to sloughing of the colonic mucosa which can lead to inflammation and subsequent colonic diseases. It can also increase your risk of dehydration. A potentially more serious concern is that certain laxatives used in colon cleansing, such as those with sodium phosphate, can cause a rise in your electrolytes, which can be dangerous if you have kidney disease or heart disease. Both the Mayo Clinic and the Susan Cohan Kasdas Colon Cancer Foundation recommend that anyone considering colon cleansing should first consult their primary care physician, or a Gastroenterologist or Colorectal surgeon. Sources: The Mayo Clinic & The Susan Cohan Kasdas Colon Cancer Foundation The following is an opinion of one colon cleansing advocate: "Many believe that colon cleansing is something invented by the mass media and other companies to generate sales and buzz, but in fact it really can be beneficial. Perhaps the products on the market are a bit unnecessary, but the idea is right. Just read the different guides and descriptions and you can see that their is a lot to colon cleansing. Scientifically speaking their (sic) is a lot of research put into this topic and some good information is coming out of it." Source: WikiAnswers

How long is a kids large intestine?

I'm not able to answer this question because I don't really know. But what I would say is that's it's not at all clear what you mean. When you say 'kid' do you mean a young human or a young goat? And what age are you talking about a human kid of 3 would have a much shorter intestine than one of 11.
