Can company buy its own share?

Yes, the company can buy shares and then 'retire' them. Essentially, this lowers the count of outstanding shares for people to buy, which is a good thing. It will increase the percentage ownership of existing shareholders, and it will increase the earnings per share. Increased earnings per share may allow a company to increase its dividends to shareholders, if the company pays these out. The executives of a company (insiders) may also purchase shares in their own company, and this is legal to do, assuming they did not have 'material information' that was not known to the public. This is also a good thing since it shows that the company members think the stock price is a good value, and that they are motivated for the company to succeed.

Why would a preferred stockholder want the stock to have cumulative dividend feature?

Because if the company is ever unable to make it's preferred dividend payment, the amount rolls over for the next time. The company is not allowed to pay dividends or distributions on lower classes of shares until they catch up on the back payments owed to the preferred shareholders. Some classes of preferred don't have the cumulative feature and if the company misses a payment, the payment is lost and not made up. That is why preferred stock investors look for the cumulative feature. If a company hasn't paid in a long time and you buy the shares then the company decides to pay off the back interest you get all the past payments that are owed on the shares even though you just bought them, though after a while of non-payment it is not likely the company will ever catch up and will end up going belly up instead.

Under what conditions may the directors of acompany prefer to issue ordinary shares rather than debentures?

ordinary shares are equity whereas debentures are debt - debt is always payable, whereas, equity holders do not always necessarily demand a dividend payment immediately. it would depend on what the company wanted to use the funds for. if the funds were used to fund a project where the returns were not expected for a few years, a company may wish to issue shares rather than debentures as the debentures would have to be paid regardless of when the returns came.
