Why Stock buybacks are similar to dividends from the company?

At one time capital gains were taxed at a lower rate than dividends. Stock buy backs would reduce the number of shares making the remaining shares worth more in theory. Thus a person could sell his shares back to the company for more money than if the company had paid a dividend. Today, that is no longer the case. Dividends are taxed at about the same level as capital gains. A stock buy back gives absolutely no advantage to a stockholder. It takes money that could be used for dividends and uses it for something else. When someone claims that the accounting rules of 15 years ago still apply, you should double check.

If an investor buys stock on the ex-dividend date will that individual receive the dividend?

No, the definition of ex-dividend date is trading without the dividend. Any stock purchased "ex-dividend" date is not entitled to the dividend.

AND equally as importantly OFFSETTING this - is the insatnt that happens the stock price is reduced by the amiunt of the dividend being paid. NO you cannot "steal" a dividend - that is buy it the day before the divideden gets paid (or ownership date actually) - and sell the day after - all you do is get the dividend and the equally lower stock value.

Is there any value to the old Daimler Chrysler stock certificates?

You can contact the state that your certificate was incorporated in, each state has a department that handles such things. This site has each state's department contact information listed

www.secstates.com

Databases/directories of corporate changes can also be useful in determining the value of your shares. Reasonably priced databases and those available to the public that is. Most local business libraries could help you out.The next step is then to contact either the transfer agent (found on the stock certificate) just google the name and you should have a number to call. They will have all information as to what happened to the company, if anything was left for investors etc.. if by any chance the companies transfer agent has also gone by the wind.

The state will be able to determine for you when the companies charter was cancelled although will not be able to tell you if any dividends or other capital payments were left for investors.

In all I would go with professional help, a broker or other financial advisor can help. Or you can go with a online research firm to evaluate your companies position. I founded a site last year to break competition in the space, we offer the lowest price and the most comprehensive research.

What are the prerequisites of becoming a day trader?

As far as I know the only requirement is to have no less than $25,000 in your account. Call up your broker to be certain of all the requirements. I've heard of accounts being frozen for a short period of time because of accidental day trading. Most of the time, the larger brokers have great/friendly customer service.

Good luck with it!
