Do allosaurs eat meat or plant?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Allosaurus only ate meat, no plants. As large carnivores, they would have hunted large herbivorous dinosaurs such as Camptosaurus, Dryosaurus, and Stegosaurus, and may have even gathered together to cooperatively hunt huge sauropods such as Diplodocus, Brachiosaurus, Camarasaurus, and Apatosaurus.

What is the size of an alasaurus dinosaur?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Allosaurus usually grew to be about 28 feet long, although especially large individuals would have been up to 32 feet long. They were about 10 to 12 feet tall, and weight estimates range from 2,200 lb to 8,800 lb.

What is the height of the allosaurus?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The height to the top of an Allosaurus's head was nearly 10 feet. That makes them slightly taller than an Indian elephant.

What did allosaurus eat and how did it gets it food?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Allosaurus was a large, carnivorous dinosaur, and its prey would have been large, herbivorous dinosaurs such as Camptosaurus, Dryosaurus, and Stegosaurus. In addition, they would have hunted young sauropods such as Diplodocus, Apatosaurus, Camarasaurus, and Brachiosaurus. If they ever hunted in packs, Allosaurus may have even hunted adult sauropods. To hunt their smaller prey, Allosaurus would ambush it, then sprint to capture it by clinging to the prey with its claws. Then it would kill it with bites to the throat. For large sauropods, they would have mobbed the prey and repeatedly slashed it until it bled to death.

How does allosaurus hunt its prey?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Allosaurus probably hunted large, herbivorous dinosaurs such as Camptosaurus, Dryosaurus, and Stegosaurus. If they hunted in packs on occasion, they may have even hunted huge sauropods such as Diplodocus, Brachiosaurus, Camarasaurus, and Apatosaurus.

Allosaurus probably started by stalking its prey before it would spring into action and pursue it. Allosaurus's top speed has been estimated at 19 to 34 miles per hour.

Allosaurus didn't have a very strong bite force; in fact, it was only about 2,148 N, and thus it was weaker than that of lions and crocodiles. Robert T. Bakker found adaptations in Allosaurus that were similar to those of saber toothed cats. It had very strong neck muscles, relatively weak jaw muscles, and could open its mouth extremely wide. Bakker suggests that Allosaurus could have killed large prey such as sauropods by opening its mouth wide and repeatedly slashing the prey with its upper teeth, causing it to eventually bleed to death.

With smaller prey, such as Camptosaurus, Allosaurus could have grasped it with its arms and then bitten its throat, causing it to suffocate or bleed to death.

When did allosaurus die?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Most Allosaurus would have been killed by predators, other Allosaurus, or in struggles with prey or disease very young. The maximum lifespan of Allosaurus was about 28 years. If you are asking when Allosaurus went extinct, they died out about 150 million years ago.

How many finger does allosaurus have?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Tyrannosaurus has two proper functioning fingers plus a smaller, residual nonfunctional third finger.

The most primitive dinosaurs have five fingers on their hands. The first three fingers (I-II-III) have claws and the last two fingers (IV-V) didn't have claws.

As theropods (the group the T.rex belongs) evolved the goup lost the two non-clawed fingers (IV-V), reducing the number of fingers to three. Most theropods have three.

Nitpick: The correct abbreviation of Tyrannosaurus rex is Capital T [Dot] lower case rex.

So T.rex (Scientific names are in italics).

Other incorrect abbreviations: T rex, T Rex, T-Rex

Who would win in a fight between Allosaurus and Acrocanthosaurus?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Here is my knowledge. Acrocanthosaurus was 40 feet long and wieghed 5 tons, while Allosaurus is 36 feet long and tiped the scales at 7,500 pounds. Acrocanthosaurus was larger and coul take more damage, while Allosaurus had speed and eyesight on its side. Who would win? Probably Acrocanthosaurus.

Who would win in a fight between Allosaurus and Albertosaurus?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Allosaurus was 28 to 32 feet long and weighed somewhere between 2,200 and 8,800 lb depending on whose estimate you use. Tyrannosaurus rex was 40 feet long and weighed 12,000 to 26,000 lb. Tyrannosaurus rex would almost definitely defeat and kill an Allosaurus in a fight unless the Allosaurus managed to escape. Note that they never would have encountered each other, though, because Allosaurus died out about 97 million years before Tyrannosaurus evolved.

What as allosaurus habitat?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Allosaurus fossils have been found in the Morrison Formation of the western USA, the Tendaguru Formation of Tanzania, and the Lourinhã Formation of Portugal and date to between 155 and 150 million years ago. The two former areas, if not all three, were semi-arid, subtropical to tropical plains with distinct wet and dry seasons. Along rivers, there would have been forests of conifers, cycads, ginkgoes, ferns, and horsetails. Farther from the rivers there were open expanses, but rather than being covered in grass, which didn't exist yet, they were covered in ferns, and there were scattered trees. Allosaurus probably preferred the more open areas for hunting.

Was the Allosaurus bigger than the T-Rex?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Some allosaurs could've been bigger than T-rex but most would've been a bit smaller. The allosaurus size range was 20 to 36 feet depending on the species. Tyrannosaurus was aboout 39 to 40 feet long.

How fast was a allosaurus?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Allosaurus didn't ever stop growing, but they almost stopped growing around age 20. Their fastest rate of growth was 330 lb per year, and this was their growth rate around age 15. An average Allosaurus would grow to be 28 feet long and weigh somewhere between 2,200 and 8,800 lb, depending on whose weight estimate you use.

Who named allosaurus?

User Avatar

Asked by Whellerinc

---- Allosaurus was a typical large theropod, having a massive skull on a short neck, a long tail and reduced forelimbs. Allosaurus fragilis, the best-known species, had an average length of 8.5 meters (28 ft),with the largest definitive Allosaurus specimen (AMNH 680) estimated at 9.7 meters long (32 ft),and an estimated weight of 2.3 metric tons (2.5 short tons). In his 1976 monograph on Allosaurus, James Madsen mentioned a range of bone sizes which he interpreted to show a maximum length of 12 to 13 meters (40 to 43 ft). As with dinosaurs in general, weight estimates are debatable, and since 1980 have ranged between 1500 kilograms (3300 lb), 1000 to 4000 kilograms (2200 to 8800 lb), and 1010 kilograms (2230 lb) for modal adult weight (not maximum). John Foster, a specialist on the Morrison Formation, suggests that 1000 kg (2200 lb) is reasonable for large adults of A. fragilis, but that 700 kg (1500 lb) is a closer estimate for individuals represented by the average-sized thigh bones he has measured.

We don't know what its skin colour looks like but we can imagine the initial shape of its body. It would have a head similar to most carnivores, sharp rows of teeth, crests above the eyes, big bulky legs and a long tail to balance it.
It had a large head, a round body, and a long tail.
