It"s a bit like say, comparing Marilyn Monroe ( deceased) with the Rose of Fair Italy- posthumous productions ( posters, etc) Monroe was only active between the late forties and l962 , whereas Gina has been out and operational from l947 (Aquila Nera- opr Black hawk-not about Indians!)- to the present and has various ancillary activities such as photography and art. It is entirely probable that Gina has surpassed the ( most covers) total set by Jayne Mansfield in the early sixties- stretched out over time. What has this to do with the chipmunks- they were out earlier than the Chipettes and have built up momentum and also a seasonal ( Chipmunks Chrismas song) following. oddly they were ( it is almost beyond argument) a take-off on the Ronettes- as are the Chipettes. The Ronettes are Ronnie ( Veronica), Nedra, and Estelle, halo over Estelle please- we lost her last year in 2009.

I know that every one thinks that Alvin is the most popular but just because his name appears in the title doesnt mean he is the most popular. You would have to look at this from different point of views. Some people judge the most popular by cuteness or by sweetness. In that case Theodore would be favored. Others may judge by smarts and being the leader. In that case it would be Simon. Simon seems to be the oldest and tends to take charge. Dave never leaves any chimpmunk in charge but Simon such as the time in the squeakuel. Others may prefer the trouble maker or the more abnoctus one whic in this case would be Alvin.
