The 'Friendship plane' was a Fokker Tri- motor that was to be flown over the Atlantic by Wilmer Stultz in 1928. Amy Phipps Guest was to have been the first woman across the Atlantic as a passenger in it. Her family objected and she asked for another woman to volunteer to do this. Amelia volunteered and got the position as first woman passenger to fly the Atlantic. This is when she met George Putnam, her future husband , who organised this flight.
