Apart from a stint as a Nurse"s aid at a Veteran"s Hospital in World War I, Amelia Earhart, while zealously promoting women in aviation- and the ninety-nines ( organization of Women Pilots , still active) was not the Jane Adaams or related charity type. Ruth Nichols, to her credit, was involved in the charitable organizaiton called Relief Wings, involved in mercy flights, flood relief, etc. I do not say she was not charitable, but Amelia was not a ( Poster Girl) for big-league charities, Miss Nichols was and did some promotion stunts for the Salvation Army by the way. Ruth Nichols was of the Quaker persuasion.

She lived at her grandparents home in Kansas until she was 12 .

Her name was not Linda. Lady Lindy was a pun on Charles Lindbergh- the aviator of Spirit of St. Louis fame. She was a lady- and a famous pilot- so the two terms were coupled. No direct connection with the Lindy Hop - a type of dance. (but that was also named in(honor) of the airman!

Amelia Earhart flew across the Atlantic Ocean several times, but the flight that got noticed was her solo trip over the Atlantic. This trip took her more than 20 hours, but also vaulted her to fame.

This may be her birthday, which is July 24 ( in l897) this might be a local observance in Atcheson, Kansas, where she was born and a local museum honors her life and career- known, appropriately- as the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum.

apart from fixed instruments and controls on the plane- she probably used such things as plotters- 360 degree scaled circular plotting devices for plotting compass courses, the more elaborate of these had scales for drift and wind deviation, etc, these were portable devices and not fixed parts of the plane, such as throttle controls, altimeters etc. It is obvious maps would have also been used.

Earhart's last transmission to the nearby Itasca came at 8:43 am on July 2, 1937. They were running on line 157 337 north to south. The Itasca could receive her transmission but she didn't receive theirs in return. Howland Island received one last transmission from Earhart and then nothing. She was declared dead on Jan. 5, 1939.

Because she was determined to fly along over sea trip, with limited fuel and negligible radio.

Amelia's husband George died in 1950 of a kidney disease.

Amelia's mother was not that famous. Amelia did not want to be famous she wanted to prove to people that girls can do anything boys can.

According to popular belief, her plane failed and she crashed somewhere in the Pacific while trying to circumnavigate the glob.

Amelia Earhart was a Democrat and supported a New Deal course of FDR, with whom (and his wife Eleanor) they were personal friends. She campaigned for FDR in the 1936 elections.

Yeah, and maybe also for what was then the National Commissariat for Internal Affairs- the (extension) or international branch. it was remarked she was seen frequenting Oriental restauants not long before the trip. Let us not draw too many conclusions- I assume you know what the NKVD was.

Amelia got her license in 1928 when she came back from England so she could register an Avian she bought in England and exported to US. Although having been flying in US since 1921, you did not then need a license if flying private, non-commercial aircraft.
