Why is the Andes Mountain so famous?

They were made 'known' to the world by the news media when on Friday, October 13, 1972, a plane dissapeared in the Andes. They were all feared dead. 70+ days later they were found and cannibalism was suspected but never verbally confirmed until many years later. The movie 'Alive' based upon the book of the same name, came out in 1993. See the related link for more information.
