Apollo was allowed to drive Helios's chariot, but he didn't own it. Apollo also represented different things-such as art, dance, music, a little archery etc.- while Helios was solely the sun god (or Titan, whatever). Helios was 'driving' the sun, and Apollo was, I don't know, being musical, or something. How the two were connected is a question for Google.
