* It depends on the cultural beliefs of the race involved. Example: In India or China there can often be arranged marriages and the perspective groom and bride are chosen at an early age. If one believes in this custom then it has been known to work and although the couple may not love each other the wisdom of the parents decision for the two to marry is often right and the couple grows to love one another. The problem is that if this race and their cultural belief system comes to the U.S. or Canada (Western countries) then there may be a problem, because the children are more Westernized and don't always have the same belief system their parents hold true to their hearts. This can cause great problems in certain cultural believes. Westernized people prefer to choose their own partners. No one can say for sure if getting married and then perhaps falling in love later is better than being in love first and then getting married.

In many places and many cultures it is the accepted method. In such cultures they work very well.

Yes, a Hindu man can marry a Christian woman, regardless of their respective ages. In Western countries, marriage laws take no account of religion. In India, the Special Marriages Act applies to marriages across religions. Of course, if the woman is very much older than the man, there can be social and other issues that surround the marriage, but the law is only concerned with whether the marriage was validly entered into.

As someone who is not personally subject to arranged marriage, I have to say that, of the few people I know who are in arranged marriages, there seem to be pro's and con's for both ways. Marriage for love is not a sure thing, in North America there is around 50% or higher divorce rate within two years (the vast majority of which are not arranged marriages). I also know of a few couples for whom arranged marriages coincided with love or blossomed into love afterward, so having both forms of marriage is obviously possible. There must be some redeeming qualities of arranged marriage, else why continue with the practice? The same with marriage for love. Ultimately, the choice must be made by the affianced couple, follow the old ways, or the new. One must assume that the parents involved in arranging marriages, must have the best interests of the family in mind, at the very least, so the affianced person(s) need to decide if it's in their own best interests as well, and whether their own best interests either outweigh the family interests, or complement them. I believe it would be wise to at least meet your possibly future spouse. Who knows? Maybe you can have the best of both worlds.

friends take part in betrothal traditionally/religiously. in case of any dispute or misunderstanding the elderly guidance and support will bring reunion of couple.

christianity has glorified being a virgin before marriage in many ways, the Virgin Mary is a prime example of this. She is glorified and even worshiped by some groups. Christianity could push waiting for mariage for many reasons, i think potentially for more power over the people. Think, who actually weds couples? who do you have to pay to make your wedding official in most cases? A Priest.

Monogomy is safe. It provides some sort of population control, over mating with whomever you please. It prevents the spread of STD's and provides a better life for the offspring that are inevitible when having sex. A child will have a home with two people to take care of it (married mother and father), which is usually a more successful parenting technique than anything else.

in my experiences, I wouldn't say that it's nescissary to wait to get married, but i would hold out as long as you can. it makes the first time a big deal and special. You will remember your first time forever.

It's entirely up to the Punjabi family. Some men are mere children, but those days are long gone in this culture. However, once men are in their teens the parents can rule as to who they marry. If a young Punjabi man is a citizen of the U.S. or Canada then he does not have to follow the ways of the old culture. Many parents still hang onto the old ways. This is a discussion a young man should have with his parents and he should be honest with them and try to make them understand that they are now Americans or Canadians and the old ways don't fit into the modern age. Duck!

Marriage was a way to forge family ties which in those times often meant forging business relationships (primarily agriculture), social relationships or status (in the caste system), and even religious or political relationships. Parents felt children were not smart enough yet to make such a significant decision on their own, so they would work very hard to arrange the perfect marriage that would benefit their child and their family. In certain societies around the world that have industrialized only recently, or still have a strong tribal or traditional culture, this practice has remained.
