Is alprozopam the same thing as lorazepam?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No.

Alprazolam, better known by the brand name Xanax, is a different drug than lorazepam, better known by the brand name Ativan.

Both drugs are related and classified as benzodiazepines. Lorazepam is commonly used for anxiety, acute treatment in certain medical emergencies (eg., amphetamine intoxication, seizure), among other things. Unlike lorazepam and most benzodiazepines alprazolam is ONLY approved for psychiatric disorders. Alprazolam is also once a a handful of drugs approved to treat panic disorder with or without agoraphobia, a specific type of anxiety. Both lorazepam and alprazolam (and oxazepam) are approved to treat anxiety associated with depression however only alprazolam has been shown to have unique antidepressant effects of its own. In New Zealand alprazolam is actually approved to treat depression without anxiety.

How long does Ativan show up in urine drugs screens?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Ativan (brand name for lorazepam) is excreted from the body in the urine and the feces (stools). According to the first website below, 95% of the drug is excreted within 120 hours ie five days, mainly in the urine (88%).

So it should still be detectable in the urine after 5 days.

Lorazepam is a type of benzodiazepine. According to the second website below the detection period in the urine for benzodiazapines in general is 3 - 7 days.

Yes, it definitely ok to take ativan before a cortisone shot. My neurosurgeon prescribed me 2 x 1mg ativan to take before my cortisione shot in my spine. No danger at all. All it will do is relax you but don't drive after, you have to be accompanied by someone and driven home in case it hits you a little more than you thought it would.

The official DOT drug test looks for weed, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates and PCP. Benzodiazepines like Ativan aren't tested for on the standard test, but no law says your company can't ask for a benzodiazepine test if they think you're on them.
