Can a runner trying to score hurdle a catcher?

Yes but it's fairly unlikely considering that faster players are usually middle infielders and outfielders that spend a lot of time working on their speed. Also, catchers have a lot of wear and tear on their knees due to having to crouch all of the time.

What is interference in baseball?

depends on the sport, but in baseball yes he is out. its called bean-baging

EDIT: No. Baseball is not kickball. A baserunner is not out if he/she is hit by a thrown ball as long as the baserunner is in the base path. If the runner is considered to have left the base path as so to interfere with a thrown ball, or made some other purposeful effort to impede the flight of the ball (ie, stick his/her hand or leg in the way), they can be called out for interference. This is a judgment call made at the discretion of one of the umpires. However, a baserunner is considered automatically out if struck by a batted ball.

And as far as I know, bean-bagging is not a term used in baseball.

What is the elevation of the pitchers mound?

In MLB, the pitching rubber is at a height of 10 inches.

How do you determine the start of the next inning in baseball?

when you retire the side and get three outs then it will go to either the next inning or next half inning

Can a pitcher be relieved after a pitch but before the batter is either out or places the ball in play?

Yes. Either the pitcher or the batter may be substituted for at any point in the at-bat. Only if it is not the first hitter that pitcher is facing, if it is the first batter he faces, he must pitch the entire at-bat unless injured, then he may be removed from the game

How far is the pitchers mound to home plate in softball?

The pitcher's mound is 40 feet away from home plate in most competition levels. Younger levels are closer. At 18U Gold level and at the collegiate level the pitcher's mound is 43 feet away from home plate.

What is the distance between home plate and the pitchers mound in youth girls softball?

The pitching distance in softball varies in different age divisions, associations, leagues, and style of softball. The rules book for the association under which the game is being played should be the ultimate place anyone should look to be sure the field layout is correct.

Generally, these are the distances for each age division

Fastpitch
U10- 35 feet (LL Minors)

U12/U14/U16- 40 feet (LL Majors)

U18- 40 feet or 43 feet if a college player is on the team

Majors- 43 feet (LL Juniors and up)

While generally currently well aligned you need to determine the Association NSA, USSSA, ASA or Little League and the level as they do from time to time vary. Some associations actually allow some discretion at lower levels as I understand which sounds weird. (Not seen it here but the web seems to support with various tournaments posting 'which' distance they will use.

In the context above majors is USSSA majors (older) NOT LL majors who are 12 year olds and work at 40 feet. All measurements are front of pitchers plate (closest to plate) to 'point of plate' (furthest back point).

A fly ball first touches the ground fair one foot past third base untouched but then spins back and goes foul between home and third base what is it fair or foul?

It would be considered a fair ball. Once the ball touches the ground past the first or third base bag in fair territory the ball is considered fair regardless of where it may roll. Rule 2.00 of the Official Rules of Baseball defines a fair ball as follows: " A FAIR BALL is a batted ball that settles on fair ground between home and first base, or between home and third base, or that is on or over fair territory when bounding to the outfield past first or third base, or that touches first, second or third base, or that first falls on fair territory on or beyond first base or third base, or that, while on or over fair territory touches the person of an umpire or player, or that, while over fair territory, passes out of the playing field in flight.
A fair fly shall be judged according to the relative position of the ball and the foul line, including the foul pole, and not as to whether the fielder is on fair or foul territory at the time he touches the ball.
Rule 2.00 (Fair Ball) Comment: If a fly ball lands in the infield between home and first base, or home and third base, and then bounces to foul territory without touching a player or umpire and before passing first or third base, it is a foul ball; or if the ball settles on foul territory or is touched by a player on foul territory, it is a foul ball. If a fly ball lands on or beyond first or third base and then bounces to foul territory, it is a fair hit.
Clubs, increasingly, are erecting tall foul poles at the fence line with a wire netting extending along the side of the pole on fair territory above the fence to enable the umpires more accurately to judge fair and foul balls "

Is the runner out if the runner and fielder incidentally collide?

if the fielder is a) in the baseline, and b) doesn't have the ball, then no.

If the runner goes out of the baseline to strike the fielder, he is out for leaving the baseline.

If the fielder has the ball, and as a result of the collision he tags the runner, then runner is out.

If the fielder has the ball and is trying to tag the runner, but the collision knocks the ball loose, then the runner is out if the umpire felt the contact was intentional, but it is a loose/live ball if the contact was accidental or otherwise part of the game.

How many bases does the runner get on a overthrown baseball?

For an overthrown ball that winds up out of play (in the stands or dugout), each runner may advance one base. If an overthrown ball does not go out of play but is kicked out of play or by some other means is put out of play, runners may advance two bases. This very, very rarely occurs but lets say there is a routine ground ball to the shortstop and he makes a poor throw to first base that gets by the first baseman and comes to rest in front of the dugout. The catcher runs over to retrieve the ball and, in his haste, kicks the ball into the dugout. In this case, runners may advance two bases.

What are the 10 ways to reach first base safely?

1) Base hit

2) Ground rule double

3) Base on balls

4) Hit by pitch

5) Fielder's choice

6) Error

7) Catcher interference with a swing

8) Fielder obstruction while running to first

9) Umpire interference

10) Dropped third strike

How many innings in a typical baseball game?

A regular baseball game has 9 innings. If the score is tied after 9 innings, extra innings are played until until the game is resolved. The longest running game in professional baseball history lasted 33 innings with 8 hours and 25 minutes of playing time. It was between the Pawtucket Red Sox and Rochester Red Wings from the Triple-A International League in 1981.

Could a Pinch runner be a player in the game?

You can have as many pinch runners as necessary. Of course, there are only 25 active players in the roster. In the American League, 10 of those players are already started in the game, leaving 15 players. Technically you could use 15 pinch runners if you really wanted to. Once a player is removed from the game, he cannot come back.

When does an umpire throw a ball out of play?

MLB Rule 5.08 states: "If a thrown ball accidently touches a base coach, or a pitched or thrown ball touches an umpire, the ball is alive and in play. However, if the coach interferes with a thrown ball, the runner is out."

MLB Rule 5.09(g) states: " A pitched ball lodges in the umpire's or catcher's mask or paraphernalia, and remains out of play, runners advance one base; If a foul tip hits the umpire and is caught by a fielder on the rebound, the ball is "dead" and the batsman cannot be called out. The same shall apply where such foul tip lodges in the umpire's mask or other paraphernalia. If a third strike (not a foul tip) passes the catcher and hits an umpire, the ball is in play. If such ball rebounds and is caught by a fielder before it touches the ground, the batsman is not out on such a catch, but the ball remains in play and the batsman may be retired at first base, or touched with the ball for the out. If a pitched ball lodges in the umpire's or catcher's mask or paraphernalia, and remains out of play, on the third strike or fourth ball, then the batter is entitled to first base and all runners advance one base. If the count on the batter is less than three balls, runners advance one base."

If a pitched ball strikes an umpire the ball is in play. If a pitched ball lodges in the umpire's mask all runners advance one base.

If an infielder boots the ball from out of the base path into the base path and the runner runs in to him is the fielder guilty of interference and the runner awarded the next base?

One Answer:Yes, The base runner is guilty of interference if he is contacted by a batted ball other than an infield fly. Another Answer:In MLB, it depends on whether or not, in the umpire's judgment, the interference was intentional or not.

Rule 7.08(b)Comment states, in part:

...If, however, the runner has contact with a legally occupied base when he hinders the fielder, he shall not be called out unless, in the umpire's judgment, such hindrance, whether it occurs on fair or foul territory, is intentional...

When can a runner advance after a fly ball has been caught?

The definition of "Catch" in MLB Rule 2.00 includes this comment: "A fielder may reach over a fence, railing, rope or other line of demarcation to make a catch. He may jump on top of a railing, or canvas that may be in foul ground."

It would seem he could climb up a fence, but not over it.

What is the verb phrase in The next batter will probably hit the ball out of the park?

"will probably hit the ball out of the park"

  • will is the first verb
  • probably is an adverb
  • hit is the second verb
  • the ball is the definite pronoun and noun
  • out of the park is the preposition

Together all those make up the verb phrase. In this case, your verb phrase is also the predicate of the sentence.

What is inning in base ball game?

"Inning" is derived from the word "in" just like the word "outing" is derived from the word "out." An inning is to be "in" as an "outing" is to be "out." An inning can refer to any particular stay, even a political term in office. In baseball, the length of term for being "in" or an inning, is 3 "outs" per side, or 6 outs. The word "out" used during an "inning" signifies that the length of one's term is coming to an end, as in "three outs and the other side is in (or "up"). Each particular batter has an "inning" also because he is "in" the batter's box and has three "strikes" (the length of his term) until he is "out" (unless he otherwise hits the ball into play). The word "inning" itself did not commence with the invention of baseball but was already in use.
