Why does the MLB pitchers bat in one league and not the other?

In the National League pitchers are treated like any other player and must bat for their order in the lineup, in the American League the pitchers spot in the lineup can be taken by a designated hitter. Since the two leagues have different rules, They go by the rules for the ballpark they play in. If it is in a National League ball park, the pitcher hits, if it is in an American League ball park they use a DH. This applies for any regulation game, regular season and playoffs

How many people is on a baseball team?

In the Majors, 25 from opening day until the end of August. That usually includes 5 starting pitchers, 6 relief pitchers, 8 starting position players, one extra catcher, and five bench players who can pinch hit, pinch run, become defensive substitutes in the later innings, and generally back up the starting position players. In September, the teams can expand their rosters up to 40, (to give some of the top minor league prospects whose seasons have ended a shot to play in the "bigs"). Playoff teams must reduce their roster back to 25 in October, and all of their players needed to be roster players for the team by Aug.1 to be eligible to play in the playoffs.

What is the rover position in baseball?

There is no rover in baseball. Some softball leagues allow a rover, which is simply an extra fielder. The rover usually plays in shallow center-field, but like every other player (except the pitcher and catcher), can play anywhere on the field at any time.

Does a batter get a RBI on a wild pitch?

Good question. The only thing that would be close to a WILD PITCH RBI would be if the batter swung at the pitch for a third strike, which of course the catcher couldn't catch. There would have to be a runner on third, and the batter would have to be safe at first on the dropped third strike rule. I do not believe that this would truly be an RBI though, because technically, a dropped third strike is like a walk, the batter is not credited with a hit.

How far is homeplate from the outfield wall on a major league baseball field?

The suggested length of a field is 200 feet to the fence. However there are no set dimensions for length. If asking about the length to the outfield grass again there is a suggested length which is a 70 feet radius from the pitching rubber.

Does base on balls count as a earned run?

Under most circumstances, this would be an earned run, provided he eventually scores.

However, there are a few cases where it would not be an earned run. One example would be if the inning is extended by an error, no runs scored after that error are earned.

What happens in baseball if one team only has 7 players?

Forfeit. You must have eight to start and when the ninth batter should be up he is declared out unless the other team is willing to let that slide.

What are the 19 ways a batter can be declared out?

I don't know how many times, I've answered this on other pages but it's always fun. Here is the official ruling right from the MLB Rules Book. Rule 6 - The Batter

Rule 6.05

The umpire shall call Strike Three the batter is out and the run shall not count; before two are out, the umpire shall call Strike Three the ball is dead and the run counts.

BUT WAITE THERE IS MORE......Rule 6.06

Does reaching base on an error count as a hit?

The official formula for on-base percentage is (Hits + Walks + Hit by pitch) / (At-bats + Walks + Hit by pitch + sacrifice flies).

Reaching base on an error goes against your BA and OBP, as it doesn't count as a hit but counts as an at bat.

What is the distance from a pitchers mound to home plate?

60 feet, 6 inches

In high school, college, and professional baseball, from the back corner of the home plate to the front edge of the pitcher's plate (or rubber, if you prefer) is 60 feet 6 inches.

The front of home plate, the 17 inch wide line that defines the strike zone, is 17 inches closer to the pitcher, 59 feet and 1 inch from the rubber.

For 13-16 year olds it's 50 feet 4 inches, and in little league it's 45 feet

For a 10u league it's 35 feet, and for a 12u it's 40 feet

For women's college softball, it's 43 feet, and for men, it's 46 feet.

Is the batter credited with a double if he is thrown out while advancing to third base?

No, once you are tagged out you don't get credited with anything if you are the one at bat. Now if another batter hits the ball and there was already a man on base at first and he gets tagged at 2nd base, then yes the man on 1st base would get the single from his previous at bat If the batted ball was cleanly a base hit and he was thrown out trying to advance past first base then the batter would be given the hit corresponding to the last base the batter reached safely. If the batter was thrown out at second, the batter would be given a single. If the batter was thrown out at third, the batter would be given a double. If the batter was thrown out at home plate, the batter would be given a triple.

What does eh stand for in high school baseball?

What do players expect to happen when they argue with a referee or umpire?

some may say it's so you can boosts your teams momentum/confidence,

but that's crap. when you argue with the umpire/referee, you'll get in some sort of trouble depending on what sport you're playing. for example, in netball you'll get a warning and if you do it again you'll be sent off. in basketball you can be sent out af the stadium until you calm down.

people argue with the umpire/referee when they don't agree with the decision the umpire/referee has made in the game.

What is the major league baseball distance from home plate to pitching rubber?

The pitching rubber is 60 feet 6 inches from home plate. The number was intended to be 60 feet even, but messy handwriting on the baseball field blueprint was read as "6" instead of "0".

Who plays 2nd base when the ball goes to the left field?

When a ball is hit into left field it is the shortstop's job to act as a cutoff man while the second baseman covers second base and when the ball is hit to right field it is the second baseman's job to act as a cutoff unless the play is at home then the outfielder will throw to the first baseman as a middle man while the shortstop covers second base. Now if the ball is hit to center field then it is the shortstop's job to cutoff unless again the play is at home then the first baseman is the cutoff.

Can a pitch that lands on home plate be a strike?

It is a base. Under rule 2.0 of the MLB official rule book, " A BASE is one of four points which must be touched by a runner in order to score a run; more usually applied to the canvas bags and the rubber plate which mark the base points."

Is the batter out if he steps on home plate after he hits the ball?

No. Home plate is considered fair territory and is treated as any other part of the field. However, if the batter is stepping on home while making contact with the ball, he is out for having touched the ball in fair territory. ---------- The above is not necessarily true. The rule says if the batter has all of one or both feet out of the batter's box when making contact with the pitch, he's out. But it's certainly possible for a batter's toe to be on the plate while his heel is on the inside line of the batter's box, and he would be legal. Next time you watch a Major League game, look for the inside line of the batter's box. In most ballparks, they don't chalk the inside line. Why? Because then it's up to the umpire to decide if, in his judgment, the batter's entire foot was out of the batter's box when he made contact with the pitch. It makes for fewer discussions with the Managers. And by the way, if the entire foot is out of the batter's box, and the batter makes contact with the pitch, he's out, whether he hits the ball fair or foul.

Does the run count if the the runner crosses home before the out is committed?

The run does not count if a runner crosses home plate during an inning-ending double (or triple) play, where the runners are all retired on force outs (as is the case in most double plays). Generally speaking, if the third out is recorded by a force out (including at first base), no runs can score on the play.

If the inning's third out was not recorded through a force play (whether or not it's the second or third out of that play), however, the run will count if the runner crossed the plate before the out was recorded. For example, on April 28, 2007, the Indians recorded a double play by catching a fly ball and catching the runner off first base. The runner from third base had already crossed the plate (after tagging up properly), so the run counted. In that case, the umpires actually got the rule wrong, and reversed themselves 3 innings later.

Example of implicit cost?

There is almost an implicit assumption that tutors know about these things.

How many outs are in an inning of baseball?

There are six (6) outs in one full inning of baseball. Each team will have 3 outs each.

If a pitcher starts pitching in the 1st inning and finishes after the 9th inning, then how many innings did he pitch? Is it 9 or 4 1/2? Or is 9 innings just understood? Do the math. There are 6 outs in 1 inning. 6 X 9 equals 54 outs. One pitcher 27 outs, the other pitcher 27 outs. WHICH means they each pitched 1/2 a game. Which means they each pitched ____4 1/2 innings.
6. 3 for the away team, 3 for the home team.
