You can only leave the base in softball once the pitcher has released the ball for the pitch. If you leave sooner and an umpire sees you, you will be called out. You can also leave the base once you have returned if the ball because live again after becoming dead (i.e. the pitcher makes a motion to throw someone out at a base.

As a softball player i must say it is popular because parents, family, friends, and fans have as much love for the games as the players. If the players aren't sure this is where they are supposed to be the games is lost for everyone.

The distance from the pitcher's mound to home plate is 60.5 feet. If the ball would be released exactly from the pitcher's mound, it would take approximately 0.43 seconds. But, if you don't want to count that last part of the windup which takes place from the pitcher's mound until the ball is released from the hand, assuming that that distance is about 5 ft, then it takes approximately 0.4 seconds to reach home plate.

It all depends on where you go, what level, and what kind of shape the program was in that you've inherited. Depending on how successful the school has been in this sport they may put more money up to continue the winning tradition. At a DIII job or a NAIA job I would say around what a professor makes and then a little extra depending on the booster clubs. Once you get into DI (division 1) that's where the money greatly varies. I know the Baylor coach was getting paid somewhere around $90,000 from the school and not counting anything else from the booster clubs, but his salary has greatly increased ever since his success of bringing them deep into the tournament. I'd Google different divisions and find their averages.

You usually need one from each team if you have real umpires but I would carry a few extras just in case one gets messed up, or flies out of the park. If you are just playing a game just for fun, you really only need one! :)

On average most high school teams will run from home to first in 3.25 seconds. A good time would be three flat and anything below. Olympian and All-American Shortstop Natasha Watley runs a 2.75 and she's about the fastest there is.

The definition of "Catch" in MLB Rule 2.00 includes this comment: "A fielder may reach over a fence, railing, rope or other line of demarcation to make a catch. He may jump on top of a railing, or canvas that may be in foul ground."
It would seem he could climb up a fence, but not over it.

No. For 12 years (since 1996) softball was part of the olympics, but 2008 was the last year it was. It has been removed from the olympic games, and will not be a part of the 2012 London games.
Softball is not in the Olympics coming up do to lack of supporters of the sport. It was in the last Olympics but not 2012.
