No. It is not a violation if the contact with any part of the foot or leg was accidental. If it was intentional then the player is guilty of kicking the ball.

If you are trying to save the ball from going out of bounds and you throw the ball off of an opponent when he is out of bounds whose ball is it?

If the opponent has established position out of bounds (at least one foot on the floor) then the ball would still be yours. If the opponent is in the air and has not established position out of bounds the ball is still live.

There is nothing wrong with dribbling the ball over your head, even though you should dribble from the floor to your waist for proper dribbling. As long as you don't necessarily carry the ball, or put your hand under it to move the ball, it is not considered a carry.

What is considered over and back in basketball?

It is announcer-speak for when a player reaches over another player from behind, typically in a play for the ball. It is typically cited as a foul, not a violation.

Contrary to popular belief, however, it does not in and of itself constitute a foul. To be a foul, it must occur with illegal contact (and not all contact in an over-the-back situation is necessarily illegal). It is often yelled by spectators and coaches alike and, unfortunately, even called by some officials. But there is no foul called over-the-back--and it does not exist as a call available to officials, either.

Can a basketball legally hit the top of the backboard?

It is not legal under NCAA rules:

Art. 3. The ball shall be out of bounds when it passes over the backboard

from any direction.

In NBA the rule is slightly different:

b. Any ball that rebounds or passes directly behind the backboard, in either direction, from any point is considered out-of-bounds.

Note the word 'directly'. Here's the official interpretation from NBA vice president of referee operations Joe Borgia in 2009:

"Think of the backboard as a long tunnel that goes straight back," Borgia said. "If the ball goes through that tunnel, it's a violation. If you looked at Rondo's shot, it was an arching shot up and over the backboard. It never passes through the tunnel."

This is why Bird's shot is waived off while other shots that flew over the backboard but not from behind the backboard are valid.

Bird's shot is legal under FIBA rules.

How high does a 5'11 person have to jump to dunk pn a basketball goal?

Yes, Spud Webb was 5 feet 7 inches and played in the NBA. He was known for being able to dunk easily for someone of his size. Nate Robinsion, a 5 feet 9 inches player for the New York Knicks just won the 2009 dunk contest over 6 feet 11 inch Dwight Howard. I stand at 5 feet 8 inches and my father stands at 5 feet 7 inches and we are both able to dunk.

Qualities of a good shooter in basketball?

I think that the qualities of a good shooter would include these:

1. Good Form- A good shooter must have good form. If you don't know what good form is ask an experienced player, or watch players like Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Micheal Jordan, or J.R. Smith, all excellent shooters.

2. Experience- A good shooter needs experience from games and most importantly from practice. An extremely good shooter will most likely be taking 500 shots a day at least. Practice is key to becoming a good shooter. Also game time or experience. I don't think enough people realize how big of a mental game basketball is, game time will help tremendously in gaining confidence to shoot.

3. Confidence- A good shooter has to have confidence. Once you get the ball you have to know the ball is going in even before you shoot it. Confidence can be built differently for different people, some need game time, others just need practice.

4. Practice- I can't stress how important practicing your shot is. A good shooter practices their shot continually. I mean everyday, its not like a player gets good at shooting and then never has to practice, a good shooter will practice everyday, getting thousands upon thousands of shots in, putting themselves in game situations. Shots from all angles continually with consistancy in good form.

I think these are the top qualities you should get more information on form as it is the basis of a good shooter. People make livings off of being a shooting coach and working with players to perfect their form. If you are serious on becoming a good shooter get the form down and then practice practice practice until you are sick of holding a basketball.
