Hooker brought a massive army south, hoping to threaten Richmond or bring Lee to open battle where his vastly numerical superiority would crush the Confederates.

However, Lee sent Jackson's corps on a flank march, which hit Hooker's right flank like a thunderbolt, rolling the Union right up like a wet blanket. Hooker lost his nerve, and retreated.

Lee managed to wrong-foot Hooker, enabling Stonewall to mount a shattering charge that made for a decisive victory. But Stonewall was mortally wounded by his own men in the evening, possibly due to confusion in bad light, but believed by some to have been an assassination.

It was Lee's finest hour, but also the beginning of the end for him and his army. Without Stonewall, he could never carry out the same bold thrusts as before. Also it was from this time that his health began to fail - perhaps due to this psychological blow.

During the American Civil War, the Battle of Chancellorsville (fought in early May 1863) was won by the South because of the superior generalship of the forces it employed along with serious flaws in the command-decisions of several Union generals in the opposing force. General Robert E. Lee proved himself (yet again) in this battle to be a daring and decisive military commander, daring to split his forces, several times and to good effect, in the face of an enemy that outnumbered his greatly yet suffered from overly cautious or simply incompetent leadership.

The Union might well have won this one, under its confident and energetic commander, Joe Hooker.

But he was wrong-footed by Lee, who made a speciality of avoiding the ground on which his opponents tried to bring him to battle. Also Lee was still teamed with Stonewall Jackson, though this would be their last and most brilliant triumph. (Stonewall was mortally wounded in an incident of which there are many mysterious versions.)

Why was the battle of chancellorsville important?

After the two victories, in particular that of Chancellorsville, Lee was inclined to put in motion the plan for the invasion of Pennsylvania, which was abandoned after the Battle of Antietam.

But the sudden plunge of the events on the front of the Mississippi, many Confederate military leaders wondered if the project of an attack in Pennsylvania was the wiser.

Among them was General Longstreet, who after Jackson's death was the most influential and the most skilled among Lee's lieutenants.

He was of the opinion that it would have to attack in Tennessee against General Rosecrans. For this purpose he proposed to concentrate not only the few troops

that Johnston had at Jackson, Mississippi, but also the entire I Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia. This could have been implemented exploiting the favorable location of railway lines. By so doing it would have been concentrated against Rosecrans about 100.000 men of which Lee would take command. Meanwhile Vicksburg would have been able to resist for a while and a strictly defensive should have been held on the Virginian Front

The attack in Tennessee would have broken through the center of the enemy front, isolating their wings ( deployed in Virginia and Vicksburg ) compelling the Union to draw Grant from Vicksburg to plug the leak.

The idea was submitted to the judgment of Lee and the Confederate High Command and Government, which ruled that the offensive had to be set off on the front of Virginia, because it was believed that a great victory won there would have not only given a mortal blow to the North, but also obtained for the federal recognition of France and Great Britain.

This question has a "when" and a "where" making it two separate questions. I hesitate to try and "splite it" So I will answer each.

The Battle of Chancellorsville was in May of 1863. Confederate General Lee launched a surprise attack on Union forces in eastern Virginia. The Chancellorsville lay between the Confederate capitol of Richmond and Washington DC. Lee won by driving the Union forces back across the Rappahannock River. It was a costley victory as Southern General Stonewall Jackson was killed in the conflict. Civil War historians regard the battle as the most masterfull battle by Lee in the War.
