HE wants to disturb and destory people and their properties. Grendel wants to find out the meaning of his life. He is lonely, there is no one he can talk to, and he wants to know why he is as he is.

The epic trait of vast settings in Beowulf is evident through its various locations such as Herot hall, Grendel's mere, and the dragon's lair. These settings contribute to the epic nature of the poem by showcasing the expansive world in which the heroic deeds of Beowulf take place. The vast settings also add to the grandeur and scope of the challenges that Beowulf faces throughout the narrative.

Beowulf and his men fall asleep in Heorot, Grendel comes into the hall and attacks them. Grendel devours one of Beowulf's men, Beowulf had been feigning sleep and jumps up and grabs Grendel's arm. The two have a long violent battle that nearly brings the hall down. Finally Beowulf tears Grendel's arm from his body at the shoulder. Grendel runs to the marshes to die.

Beowulf believes the outcome of all his efforts are determined by God and fate. Although viewed as a pagan tale, the poem contains many overt nods to Christianity. The belief was that the ultimate decision of one's death lay in God's grace.

In the story Beowulf, Grendel does not touch or take over Hrothgar's throne. This is because Hrothgar's throne was believed to be "of God". Grendel being a monster could not touch anything that was "of God".

Unferth is allowed to speak to Beowulf that way because he is questioning Beowulf's accomplishments and challenging his reputation as a great warrior. His remarks are meant to test Beowulf's confidence and to assert his own position in front of their peers. It is a way for Unferth to establish his own presence and to potentially discredit Beowulf.

King Hrothgar's home for his soldiers was being built and the noise from the construction was annoying to Grendel. Next, he was woken up by the noise of the soldiers celebrating in Herot which annoyed him even more.

OH my gosh! I did a free response paper on this. I thought the whole mountain scene was similar to the hobbit: neither Bilbo nor Beowulf could find the door to the mountain, and also the dragon: both dragons sat on treasures. The whole story is like the hobbit. All of a sudden he's called on this journey to defeat a dragon, and the reason why is... cloudy.
