A little after the attack, but she never wears it because wearing the prosthetic requires several straps and being fully-clothed and Bethany spends most of her time in the water, so the prosthetic only slows her down since she can't put weight on it

Well, it was a tiger shark, BUT it didn't kill her, she just lost her left arm. She is still alive today, 20 years old, and still surfing.
When she lost her arm, she had to learn how to do things with only one arm, basically having to learn how to do everything all over again
On that day, at Tunnels Beach in Kauai, Hawaii, there were numerous turtles in the area. And Bethany was also dangling her left arm in the water. What most likely aggravated the shark was the watch reflecting the sun. Sharks are drawn by blood, shiny objects, and reflections.
She won her first real competition when she was 8 years old: the 1998 Rell Sunn Menehune Surfing Championships on Oahu, Hawaii

If the book is anything like the movie (too often, that's not the case), then the theme of the book is that what we often think of as important or the be-all end-all really isn't that crucial sometimes and that what we're meant to do is often different than what we think it is, so keep your mind and your heart open. That's what I got from it anyway. I think a secondary theme is also that if you want something, truly know why you want it and keep working smart, not only hard, to achieve it, despite taking some bumps along the way. If anyone thinks I'm wrong, please feel free to improve my answer.
Yes. It was in 2005 with World Vision, a Christian relief, development, and advocacy organization dedicated to working with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice, such as the injustice from natural disasters
It happened in 2003. In the movie, the events happened over a span of 4 months. In reality the events took place in over a year, such as when Bethany went to Thailand 2 years after she quit surfing
14, for the book was written nearly one year after the attack
That shark was a 14-foot-long tiger shark, which is the 2nd most dangerous shark in the world
The day of the attack, Tom Hamilton had to get knee surgery (he was locally anesthetized). But Bethany was admitted to the hospital right before the surgeon could even begin
PG
mostly because of the shark attack scene, which really isnt bad at all
Through 6 grade at Hanalei Elementary School. She started homeschooling to have more time for surfing at 7 grade.
Somewhat. But the meaning behind that name is because her faith in Jesus Christ helped her to win the fight in beating the odds of never being able to surf again. And, to Bethany, surfing is her passion and her way of life
