What happens if you pot the white ball in pool?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If you're talking about the game of pool - and you pot a 'spot' and a 'stripe' ball off the break - you have a choice of which to go for next. Most people who do this off the break choose whichever set of balls are in the best position to clear the table.

How many quarter do a pool table hold?

There is no standard quarter holder on pool tables. In fact, most locations with coin operated tables have moved from placing quarters on tables to using chalkboards to eliminate arguments of the order of quarters.

How do you install pool table felt?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Replacing the surface felt is fairly easy. First the rails need to be removed - this can be done as one large assembly on most tables by removeing only the bolts that hold the rails to the frame. If there is a ball return, these must be unbolted first. After removing old felt and brads and staples, lay the new felt in place, proper side up. go to the center at one end and secure the felt to the slate board under the slate. Go to the other end of the table and pull the felt taut, but not tight (no wrinkles should form when pulling). Secure the felt to the board. Go to a corner and pull taut and secure. Go to the diagonally opposite corner, pull taut and secure. Repeat for the other 2 corners. Look at the felt and be sure it is square and not pulled in any direction - if it is, start over. Secure the felt around the table between the points you have secure. Go to a pocket and trim slowly with a razor or hobby knife to get small triangles that you now secure in the pocket area, pulling taut. Repeat with each pocket. Be careful to not create wrinkles. Trim all excess felt, re-install the rail assembly. If you have a new foot spot, locate the instersection at the foot and apply.

Is there such thing as quiet billiard balls?

User Avatar

Asked by Ataraxic

All pool balls are quiet until they collide with another ball. This happens only for a very brief fraction of a second during the typical pool shot.

Pool balls cannot be made of any other material that will change the sound they make on impact, so they cannot be quieter than they already are.

How may colored balls in billiards?

[15 reds, 1 yellow, 1 green, 1 brown, 1 blue, 1 pink and 1 black.]

Those are the colours used in Snooker which is played on an English Billiards table.

English Billiards uses just three balls: a red, a plain white and a 'spot' white (or increasingly commonly these days, a yellow).

How do you setup the balls on a pool table?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Follow these steps:

  1. Place all 15 red balls inside the triangle, then place the triangle between the pink spot and the black spot.
  2. Place the black ball on the black spot, underneath the red ball triangle.
  3. Place the pink ball on the pink spot, above the red ball triangle.
  4. Place the blue ball on the blue spot, in line with the middle pockets in the centre of the table.
  5. Place the brown ball on the brown spot, in the centre of the baulk line.
  6. Place the green and the yellow balls either side of the brown ball; if you are looking down the table towards the reds, the green ball should be placed to the left-hand side of the brown and the yellow ball to the right-hand side. These are in opposite corners of the 'D'.
  7. Finally, the white ball is placed anywhere inside the 'D' for open break shot.

Who is the inventor of game billiards?

User Avatar

Billiards was played outdoors on the ground with balls and sticks, called cues, in the 14th century. It became an indoor game when billiard tables began to be used indoors in the 17th century.
1650-1750. No one knows exactly when the Italian game of trucco, using balls and cues on the lawn, was moved inside and became a table game. However, billiards (from the Italian billiardo) was popular by the late 1700's. The modern game of billiards owes its creation to the leather pool tip which was adopted in very early 1800's.

No. Billiards evolved in Italy and France from an Italian lawn game referred to as trucco. Trucco uses balls and cue sticks, and was moved indoors and onto a table but there is no record of who first had the idea to make it an indoor game.

Where the dot on pool table is placed?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The dot is halfway between the second set of diamonds (from the end) on the long sides of the table. The "dot", or "spot" as it is more commonly called, goes on the imaginary "foot string", and is where the balls are typically racked. You can see a diagram explaining this in the Related links section, below.

How do you take apart a Riley pool table?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The typical pool tables can have their rails removed as a single assembly, by removal of the bolts underneath. This is done when the reason for disassembly is to replace the surface cloth. Prior to removal of rails, the ball return must be disconnected, if the table has one.

If full disassembly is needed, the surface cloth must be removed after the rails - this is typically just ripped ff, and all brads or staples underneath removed. This exposes the slate and its screw holes, which are covered with plaster. A small screwdriver is used to ship out the plaster and a large screwdriver to remove the slate screws. Once the slate is lifted off, all the bolts securing the table foundation are exposed and these nuts and bolts are removed.

From the factory, all parts are marked, but check to be sure as the table is disassembled. The table will need expensive professional squaring if the parts are not marked and assembly is attempted.

How do you pot a snooker ball?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

To put spin or side on a cue ball you strike the ball off-centre. So imagine a point in the centre of the ball which is half way up from the table and directly opposite to the direction you wish the ball to travel. If you strike the ball around this point you will force the ball to spin. So strike below this point to put backspin on the ball, above this point to put top-spin and either side to put side-spin. Obviously you can impart both top and side or bottom and side by striking the ball towards a diagonal. The spin you put on the ball will act to move the ball in the direction of the spin. This is most notable in back-spin where once the forward momentum of the ball is taken by striking another ball the backspin cause the ball to move in th opposite direction of the strike. The amount of spin placed on the ball can take affect as the ball is moving, so enough side-spin can cause the ball to follow a curved path. The effects of the spin can be improved by tilting to follow the type of spin you wish t impart; so hold the butt of the cue higher to get better backspin or hold the butt lower to get better top-spin. Doing this with side spin becomes difficult as you have to adjust the angle of the strike. In its most extreme you can strike downwards towards the side of the ball to cause it to curve - this takes a lot of practice and you have to be careful you do not damage the table. However I find the most important part of putting spin on the ball is ensuring that you follow through the stroke with your cue and make the stroke smooth and decisive. If you snatch at the cue you will either hit the ball in the wrong place or scoop the ball causing it to jump. I hope you have found this helpful.

How big is a championship pool table?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A championship pool table can vary in size depending on the venue and format. Typically for professional 9 ball tournaments the tables used are Brunswick Gold Crown and Diamond. The table size used in these tournaments are 4.5 feet x 9 feet. It is important to note that "professional" style tables tend to use Simonis cloth that has a higher thread count than the average home or bar table. The reason this is important is because it significantly increases the speed that the cue ball and object balls travel on the playing surface.

However , most league tournaments (in the APA for example) tend to be played on Valley Bar Boxes and are 3.5 feet x 7 feet. These tables are more "forgiving" because the average shot typically travels a shorter distance and the pockets tend to be easier to make shots in. Professional tables have tighter pockets and a longer ledge where the rails meet the pockets. This can and typically will result in more balls hanging in the pocket.

In a game of pool what is the colour of the cue ball?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

White

ADD: Again a basic answer that is technically incorrect. The cue ball just needs to be identifiable from the other balls. The cue ball is the ball that you strike with your cue stick. In many games the cue ball will change during the game.

Also, with the advent of "larger" cue balls in coin operated tables at pubs, many players will use one of the like sized and weighted balls from the playing set rather than the white cue ball.

What is the proper way to rack for 8 ball pool?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

How the balls are racked depends upon the game being played and the rules in use.

For 8 Ball, APA and BCA rules are different. Both require the 6 ball in center. APA has no other requirement. BCA requires that the 2 rear corners be 1 stripe and 1 solid. It is customary, but not required, under both rules for the 1 ball to be at the apex.

For Straight Pool, the 1 ball must be to the far right corner and the 5 ball to the far left corner.

A wooden or laminate surface of the proper siize needs to be purchased from a woodworker or a supplier such as Home Depot, Lowes or other lumber supply. The contact side should be lined with felt or other fabric to prevent damage to the pool table. The weight alone is sufficent to kepp it in place after laying it across the pool table.

How often replace pool table felt?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Replacing pool table felt is very definitely a matter of "you get what you pay for". The price of pool table cloth can range from $90 to $400. The labor price to re-surface and cover the play area and the rails is typically in the $250-$300 range. So, the total price will be $350 to $700 depending upon the size, the quality of the cloth, and the experience of the installer.
