Blood Donation

Blood donation is often referred to giving the gift of life. When a person donates blood, it usually goes into a special blood bank to be used by surgery patients, accident victims, children with leukemia, and many other people. Blood banks are sometimes depleted during times such as natural disasters, and are often looking for volunteers to help keep them full.

Are The blood proteins A and B codominant?

The genes which determine the ABO phenotype are inherited in a codominant fashion.

ABO blood groups are determined by the presence or absence of terminal sugars on the red cell membrane. These sugars are placed on the red cells by enzymes (glycosyltransferases) that transfer specific sugars to the appropriate carbohydrate chain acceptor. The genes that code for the specific glycosyltranserases are located on chromosome 19. Therefore, the ABO antigens are indirect products of the genes.

Explain why a person with type AB blood can donate blood only to a person with the same?

A person with A-type can also donate to someone with AB-type as well, provided there is no conflict with any other bloodtyping (rhesus positive or negative being the major one). This is because antibodies on the blood cells in the donor are treated as invaders if they are not the right type. The recipient's body then acts in the same way as it would when fighting off a normal virus or invader; they attack the foreign cells and this creates clots throughout the circulatory system. This poses serious risks to the recipient, as they can block the arteries and veins and cause hypoxia and anaemia, as well as heart problems with life at major risk.

Is it true Selena quintanilla mom didn't donate blood when she was dying due to her religion?

The question of whether the Grammy Award-winning singer, Selena Quintanilla Perez, died because her father refused to consent to blood transfusions still makes the rounds on the internet. The quick answer is NO.

On March 31, 1995, 23 year-old Selena was shot in the back by former employee, Yolanda Saldivar. A .38 caliber hollow point bullet severed an artery leading away from Selena's heart, and she bled to death. Selena was "dead on arrival" at Corpus Christi's Memorial Medical Center. Despite such, the receiving doctor went ahead and started treatment -- possibly because of who she was. In the ER, a doctor using manual manipulation was successful at establishing a heart beat long enough to move Selena into the operating room. By then, 6 units of blood at been administered, but nearly all of such was pouring out into her chest cavity, rather than going into her circulatory system. Doctors continued with their futile efforts, but life was never restored at the hospital.

Selena's father, Abraham Quintanilla, Jr., had been told that Selena had been in an accident, and had been taken to Memorial Medical Center. It was not until he arrived at the hospital that he learned that she had been shot. The staffer who met with Abraham Quintanilla informed him of the doctor's efforts, including that Selena had been administered the six units of blood. When Abraham Quintanilla heard such, he reportedly yelled, "No! She doesn't want that!"

The doctors working on Selena never heard Abraham Quintanilla's attempt to stop the transfusions, nor were they told about such until after the fact. But, "if" Selena had still been alive at that point, and "if" blood transfusions could have saved her, then "yes", Selena's death might have resulted from her father's refusal to allow any more transfusions.

Can you donate blood if you are overweight?

Absolutely! But then you gain it back when your body produces new blood.

There is about 600 calories in a pint of blood. It takes energy to produce all of the proteins and cells in the blood. But because you can only give blood once every two months, 600 calories is not enough to make a difference. Try cutting 100-200 calories from your daily diet if you want to lose weight.

How do with Hemophilia donate blood?

Hemophilia is normally passed down from mother to son through the X chromosome. Females have two X chromosomes whereas males only have one. When a boy is born, he takes one X chromosome from his mother and one Y chromosome from his father.

Example One:

Mother(Carrier)+Father(Non-Affected)=50% chance of their son

acquiring the disorder and 50% chance of their daughter being a

carrier.

Example Two:

Mother(Non-Affected)+Father(Hemophiliac)=All sons will be

non-affected and all daughters will be carriers.

It is also important to note that approximately 1/3 of the cases of genetic hemophilia are results of random mutations where no prior family history existed. Of course, these new cases can pass the mutations on to their children as well.
