They don't make anyone look unprofessional. Others just believe it does, because that was all they were exposed to, and because that is what they were taught. I would prefer to do business with the green-haired teller with facial piercings than a guy in a boring suit whose sense of self and individuality has been destroyed. Such dress shows me that the person is their own person and can think for themselves. But that is probably the perceived threat. Employers often don't want smart people nor strong-minded individuals. They want team players who do what they are told and who don't have a sense of self.
Maybe the way out of this would be for all the modified people to start their own corporations and give preferential treatment to similarly decorated people. When they become big, they can refuse to do business with companies that have overly strict dress codes. Maybe the best way to stop the appearance bigots is to hit them in their ability to earn income.
In my opinion, schools should eliminate all but essential dress codes and prohibit students from reacting to how others are dressed. That should help reduce bullying, by exposing children to difference at an early age and teaching tolerance to it. Uniforms create artificial order and teaches nothing other than how to be bullied into wearing what others think is good for you. It doesn't prepare anyone for the real world, just the workplace with all of its superficiality and fake professionalism. In the real world, people are different and often unusually dressed. When kids are taught that only uniforms are good, they learn to bully those dressed differently in the real world. Youth attacks on adults have increased in recent years.
