There is no real difference in importance. But I personally believe that the best two are the Rose and Cotton Bowls, simply because more national championships were played in those bowls than any other bowls before the NCAA went to the BCS system.

The prestige of a bowl game is typically measured by the payout each team receives for participating. This year, each of the ten teams invited to a BCS Game (including the National Championship Game) is $18MM, therefore there is nothing more (or less) prestigious amongst any of the four lesser BCS games.

The BCS came into picture in the 1998 season. The first BCS championship game was held in January of 1999 between Tennessee and Florida State. Tennessee won 23-16 to become the first BCS National Champions.

BCS stands for Bowl Championship Series. It determines what two teams would play in the National Championship Game. The championship game winner would become the college football national champion.

As that championship game was already played January 8, 2009 it is impossible for Iowa to play in the NCAA-CFB Division-Ia Championship game DURING 2009.

However, if they win the Big-10 title AND finish the 2009 season ranked #1 or #2 in the BCS system {currently #10 or #11} they CAN play in an NCAA-CFB D-Ia Championship Game in 2010, to be played on/about January 9, 2010.

If they do so, that will be a significant accomplishment. If they do not, sorry to Hawkeye fans asking, but you should still remain proud of your team and their in-season accomplishments to date.
