Has the oil spill in the gulf of Mexico been capped?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

LMRP CapThe BP oil spill was only partially capped with a Lower Marine Riser Package, which is collecting up to 15000 barrels of oil per day. Thousands of barrels of oil per day continued to leak.

The deployment of the LMRP was on 2010 June 3. It was completed on June 5th, 2 days later.

Second CapA second cap was deployed on 2010 July 12, and was finished capping the oil spill on July 15. Tests are currently being done to determine it's stability; the tighter cap appears to have contained all leaks from the top of the pipe, but oil was found to be seeping from the ocean floor, indicating damage to the lower oil pipe.

Due to the lack of complete closure from the cap, BP will attempt to plug the well, using heavy mud and concrete.

How could the BP oil spill have been avoided?

User Avatar

Asked by Robin

There were reports that the company cut corners on maintaining part of the equipment. If those reports are true, doing that maintenance may have prevented the spill. There is also reports that the drilling device drilled into a salt mine. Either not allowing drilling close to salt mines or the company being more careful with their calculations could prevent accidents of that nature.
