Do trains run on the Brooklyn Bridge?

No. The subway trains to and from Brooklyn run on their own elevated lines. They do not use the Brooklyn Bridge. The bridge is for cars, buses, trucks, and pedestrian traffic only.

There used to be trolleys that ran across the Brooklyn Bridge, but that was only from 1898 to 1950. The old BRT line also ran over the bridge and just barely into Manhattan, to its last stop, but that was around a hundred years ago.

The simplest way is to take the Uptown A express train (of the A-C-E, the blue line) from Chambers Street to 34th Street-Penn Station. You can also take the C, but it will be a longer trip, since the C is a local train.

The entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge is located on the east side of City Hall Park. City Hall Park is bordered by Centre Street/Park Row to the east and south, Broadway to the west, and Chambers Street to the north.

When you get to the east side of City Hall Park (Park Row/Centre Street), turn right, and walk up to the north side of City Hall Park (Chambers Street).

Then walk 3 blocks west on Chambers Street to Church Street (Centre Street ---> Elk Street ---> Broadway ---> Church Street).

What river separates the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridge?

Both the Brooklyn and the Manhattan Bridge connect the borough of Brooklyn to the borough of Manhattan. Both bridges span the East River, which is actually not a river, but an estuary, or a tidal strait. Unlike a true river, it connects to the ocean on both sides. It flows south from the Long Island Sound, down the east side of Manhattan and the west side of Queens and Brooklyn, and into the Atlantic Ocean.

How did the Brooklyn Bridge help the city?

Before the Brooklyn Bridge was built, there was no way to cross the East River from Brooklyn to Manhattan, or Manhattan to Brooklyn, except by boat. Traveling between them was extremely inconvenient.

The Brooklyn Bridge changed all that. It made commuting much easier; it was now possible for people to live in Brooklyn, but work in Manhattan. It is not a coincidence that the five boroughs -- which at the time were separate cities -- incorporated into one city in 1898, only 5 years after the bridge opened. The Brooklyn Bridge helped bind the boroughs together into one city.
