Who help to built the Brooklyn bridge?
John Roebling was originally the Chief Engineer, but he died not long after groundbreaking, when a collapse on the site severely injured his foot, which led to a tetanus infection and then death. So his son, Washington Roebling, became the Chief Engineer.
Unfortunately, Washington Roebling was also injured on the job, early into the construction. He got a bad case of decompression sickness (aka "the bends" or "cassion disease") while surveying the underwater cassions. He survived, but he was bedridden for the rest of the bridge's construction.
His wife, Emily Warren Roebling, was required to speak to the workmen on his behalf, and run messages between them. She had studied engineering and higher math, and so was able to provide crucial assistance in the remaining 11 years until the bridge's completion. She was also the first person to cross the bridge when it was completed.
However, history books typically ignore her contribution, and list only John and Washington Roebling as the Chief Engineers.
What is the difference between the Manhattan Bridge and the Brooklyn Bridge?
No, they are not the same bridge. Three bridges connect Lower Manhattan to Brooklyn: the Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge and Williamsburg Bridge.
The Brooklyn Bridge is the furthest south, the Manhattan Bridge is in the middle, and the Williamsburg Bridge is the furthest north.
The Brooklyn Bridge was originally called the "New York and Brooklyn Bridge," which is perhaps where some of the confusion comes from. But when the bridge opened in 1883, New York City consisted mostly of just Manhattan. It was not until 15 years later, in 1898, that the five boroughs -- Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island -- united to form modern-day New York City.
Before then, Brooklyn was its own city (the other three consisted of small towns and farmland), so the bridge was called the "New York and Brooklyn Bridge" because it united the city of New York and the city of Brooklyn.
Of course, today Brooklyn is part of New York City, so calling it the "New York and Brooklyn Bridge" is redundant.
Who was the first person to cross the Brooklyn Bridge?
The first person to cross the Brooklyn Bridge was Emily Warren Roebling, the wife of the Chief Engineer, Washington Roebling. She was also critical to its construction.
Her father-in-law, Washington Roebling's father John Roebling, was originally the Chief Engineer, but he died not long after groundbreaking, when a collapse on the site crushed his toes, requiring amputation, which led to a deadly tetanus infection. So Washington Roebling inherited his father's job.
The younger Roebling also inherited some of his father's bad luck: he got a bad case of decompression sickness (also known as "cassion disease," or, more commonly, "the bends") while surveying the underwater cassions. Since he was bedridden during most of the bridge's construction, his wife Emily was required to speak to the workman on his behalf, and run messages between them. She had studied engineering and higher math, and so was able to provide crucial assistance over the 11 years until the bridge's completion.

Credit for the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge largely belongs to engineer Dr JCC Bradfield (who also oversaw the construction of Brisbane's Story Bridge), while the firm that built the bridge was Dorman Long and Co Ltd, Middlesbrough, Teesside. Sir Ralph Freeman, of Freeman Fox & Partners, was the designer of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Another civil engineer involved in the Sydney Harbour Bridge project was JF Pain, who was awarded the Manby Premium for a paper on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. He led a group of about forty engineers working for Freeman on Sydney Harbour bridge.
Why is Brooklyn bridge important?
Before the Brooklyn Bridge was built, there was no way to cross the East River from Brooklyn to Manhattan, or Manhattan to Brooklyn, except by boat. Traveling between them was extremely inconvenient.
The Brooklyn Bridge changed all that. It made commuting much easier; it was now possible for people to live in Brooklyn, but work in Manhattan. It is not a coincidence that the five boroughs -- which at the time were separate cities -- incorporated into one city in 1898, only 5 years after the bridge opened. The Brooklyn Bridge helped bind the boroughs together into one city.
How do you get to 26 Federal plaza from Brooklyn bridge?
The address 26 Federal Plaza is at the southeast corner of Worth Street and Broadway.
The fastest way would be to take the Downtown A train (of the A-C-E, the blue line) from 34th Street-Penn Station (at 34th Street and 8th Avenue) to Chambers Street.
Depending on which exit you use, you may exit at the corner of Church and Chambers Streets, or the corner of Church and Warren Streets (the next block down from Chambers). Walk 4 or 5 blocks north on Church Street (in the same direction as traffic) to Worth Street, then turn right onto Worth, and walk 1 block east to Broadway.
How much will a taxi cost from penn station to Brooklyn bridge?
A lot. The base fare would probably be $50 to $70. With tolls, tip and tax, it would be $65 to $85. I once had to take a yellow cab from the Upper West Side to south Westchester, just a few miles north of the border between the Bronx and Westchester. The base fare was about $110, and that was back in 2003 or 2004, before the recent fare increases.
It's much cheaper and just as convenient to take the subway. See the Related Question below.

Connection is available between the LIRR's Jamaica station and the Sutphin Boulevard-Archer Avenue station on the New York City subway system.
Transfer to the subway system (you can buy a plastic Metrocard or a paper Single Ride Ticket at one of the electronic kiosks), and board the Manhattan-bound J-Z (the brown line). You will be boarding the J train, unless you're traveling between 7 and 8:15 AM. The Z train is a one-way rush hour express train; it runs to Manhattan from 7 to 8:15 AM and from Manhattan (to Queens and Brooklyn) from 4:55 to 5:45 PM.
Take the J-Z from Sutphin Boulevard-Archer Avenue to Chambers Street. This station is really a block north of Chambers Street, on Centre Street at Reade Street. But it's connected to the Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall station on the 4-5-6 (the dark green line), which is at the corner of Centre and Chambers Streets. So depending on which exit you use, you'll exit the subway at Chambers Street or Reade Street.
The Chambers Street/Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall station is 1 to 2 blocks up from the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge. Walk 1 or 2 blocks down Centre Street (along the east side of City Hall Park). The entrance to the footpath (the Brooklyn Bridge Promenade) as well as the auto entrance, will be 1 block down from Chambers Street, across the street (across from City Hall Park).
