Bruise coloring goes through a natural progression. At first, it can look purplish or pink to reddish. This is because blood from cappillaries (very small blood vessels) has leaked into surrounding tissues.
Within a day or so, bruises can look brown or black showing that the previous bleeding under the skin is "old". From the moment a bruise occurs, the body sends natural defenses to the area to do "clean up" inside and help it heal. Macrophages is one of the primary defenses; they are like little "Pack Man" parts of each cell that go in and take out the tissue bleeding. They bring more oxygen into the area to help healing; this is why bruises sometimes feel hotter than other skin.
After 3 days to 2 weeks, bruises can take on a rainbow of colors, from pink, purple, black, green, etc. The changing color again indicates how long ago a bruise happened. None of these colors are worrisome, although they can look quite bad.
If a bruise develops a lump, or if you tend to bruise easily, you should see a doctor to get it checked out.
How can you heal a bruise quickly?
When first noticed, put ice on it. Keep it on 15 minutes a day for 2 or 3 days. Also, to stop blood flow, whenever you get the chance, lay down on a couch or bed, and put some pillows underneath your leg or arm or wherever your bruise is. You want to keep it elevated above your heart. On the third or fourth day, start taking hot baths (as hot as you can stand) or take a washcloth and drench it in hot water, then apply to skin with pressure. Keep alternating these steps every few days. It takes time for a bruise to heal, but if you want it to go away quicker, use these steps. If the bruise doesn't go away after two weeks after using these steps, consult a doctor.

Bobbi Brown Corrector. It's usually used as a concealer for intense dark circles, but if you got a darker shade, it would work as an excellent cover-up. Apply with the double headed Essence of Beauty foundation brush (inexpensive and excellent quality, available at CVS) with the concealer side of the brush and blend with the other side. If the bruise is extremely dark, I suggest buffing or "patting" the concealer in with brush, not blending.
