Bulldogs

Originally bred to bait bulls in medieval times the bulldog was built to endure rough treatment. Once bull-baiting was outlawed in the 1800's the breed nearly faced extinction. Thanks to many dedicated hobbyists the breed was brought back from the brink and selectively bred into the docile easy-going dog you see today. Questions regarding the care and history of bulldogs are welcome here.

What breeds make up an American bulldog?

There are a few different theories on the origin of the American Bulldog. One states that the current American Bulldog is a direct descendant of English bulldogs brought into the US colonies. They say the American is in fact just the English which was selectively bred for work over the years.

Another, more realistic theory is that Bull Terriers and Bulldogs were chose selctively to create the American Bulldog. As pedigrees were not typically kept early on, it is hard to determine what was added in here and there to enhance certain traits.

Are English bulldogs good swimmers?

Answer: Bulldogs can not swim as they have to small legs to keep their large, muscular body afloat

Answer: Actually, my 3 year old, pure-bred, English bulldog swims very well. He loves the water! Craves me throwing sticks for him to swim out and get! While their legs are small the front paws are very wide and until he learned to use the back legs a bit (mostly as rudders but they do paddle as well) he relied soley on his front paws.

English bulldogs are in many cases a product of their environment. If you feed the heck out of them and limit their excercise, they'll go with that and slowly evolve into a peice of furniture. If you get them walking and playing twice a day, they crave activity. With walks being hard on them in the heat, swimming is a godsend. He's wiped for hours after a good swim. Great on the hips, great cardio and makes him squeeky clean too!

Do bulldogs enemies?

The Bull Dogs enemies are the Southern Mexicans & Northern Mexican. The issues with the Southern Mexicans stem back to the begining or the Northern southern beef. The conflict with the Northerners comes from the Bull Dogs defecting from the Nuestra Familia Prison gang opting to become independant from the larger Northern Gang. This was largely based on the lack of cooperation & support that Fresno inmates received from the Northern & Central Valley Northerners who prefer to be sent to the "Hole" Administrated Segragation by faking fights with fellow Northern inmates. Instead of uniting with Fresno inmated against their hated rivals the Southern Mexican.

Other inmates see this behavior as a "P.C. move" which is one of the reasons Northern Mexicans are refered to as Busters. Fresno inmates enter the California Prison System at Wasco & Delano State Prisons which are Southern controlled Prisons. Fresno inmates must fight their rivals from day 1 where as inmates from Northern & Central Valley California go to Tracy & San Quintin State Prisons Which are primarily controlled by Bay Area Black inmates which are considered associates but not allies to the Northern Mexicans dispite rumors to the contrary.

Fresno Bulldogs are few in numbers because they are primarily based only in the Fresno county area. Dispite this they are respected for their willingness to fight both Northern & Southern Mexican inmates.

What is the difference between old English bulldogs and Victorian bulldogs?

=The modern show Bulldog is a caricature of its former self. Any knowledgeable vet will denounce that its features are detrimental to its general well being.==The modern bulldog has been specifically bred to have these over done features for the show ring.==The Victorian Bulldog resembles our national breed of circa 1890. The bulldog from this period did not have over exaggerated features. Therefore the Victorian Bulldog has longer leg length & a longer muzzle with less wrinkles than the show type bulldog.==The Victorian Bulldog is ideally suitable to be owned as a family companion. General temperament is quiet, playful & loyal. I find that the Victorian Bulldog is more intelligent than the kc show type bulldog & responds better to simple obedience tasks.==They were not developed as a guard, but they will guard if trained to at a young age, they are no different to most domestic breeds. Generally males are 65-70lbs & about 19" tall, bitches are 55-65lbs & 18" tall.==when we discovered the Victorian Bulldog this was the dog for us, more robust, with less health problems and above all it still has that great Bulldog temperament.=
