How has photography and micro filming influenced genealogy?

In ancient times (before digital photography) it took so long to take a photograph that people weren't able to procreate - often they had to sit perfectly still for several days while a photograph was taken. It was a commonly accepted 'rule of thumb' that the more photos one had taken, the fewer children one was likely to have. Also, the chemicals used in early flash photography and photographic processing (development) are now known to cause sterility and incredulity in poseurs.

How good is 1.3 megapixels?

To answer this, you have to know what the megapixel count means. The "megapixel" count is actually the number of receptors on the sensor, in millions. 1.3 megapixels means 1.3 million light receptors on the sensor. The number of total megapixels is the number of pixels it has horizontally, times the number it has vertically.

Now, each receptor you have, counts for 1 pixel in the image which comes off the camera. (It so happens that the camera actually has to make up some of these values; the reason why is beyond the scope of a short answer. This means that "megapixel" counts are lies, but that's okay; all camera manufacturers lie equally about this, so it won't affect the calculations here.)

The size of a picture you will get from a 1.3 megapixel camera will depend on your aspect ratio. A point-and-shoot camera will typically have a 4:3 aspect ratio; so to get the width and height in pixels you use:

( 1300000 / (3.0 / 4.0)) ** .5 = 1316

( 1300000 / (4.0 / 3.0)) ** .5 = 987 pixels

So you have a 1316x987 picture. Or, if your camera uses the 3:2 aspect ratio (common on digital SLRs, but seen elsewhere), you'll have just about a 1396x930 picture. How big will this print out?

* At 100dpi: this will be a fairly poor-quality print. You'll either have a 13-inch or 14-inch print from this, depending on your aspect ratio (above). * At 200dpi: this will be acceptable quality if you're not looking too hard. This will give you a 6 or 7 inch print. * At 300dpi: you'll get about a four-and-a-half-inch print from either.

As far as file sizes go, this is entirely dependent on how much JPEG compression you use (assuming that you're saving in JPEG, which you should), and even (on some cameras) the kind of scene you are photographing. According to one online calculator, you should see file sizes from around 256kb (at 90% quality) to around 512kb (at 100% quality). An uncompressed 24-bit bitmap would be about 3.9mb.

How can you tell if the signature of Lou Gerig and Babe Ruth are real in a photograph?

First thing you should do is determine if the signatures are hand signed or Facsimile signatures. A preprint, or Facsimile signature is simply a photographic copy of an original signed photograph. A Facsimile signature often appears to be below the surface gloss of the photo, and the signature is often very "flat." Hold the photo up at an angle to a light source. A real signature is written on the surface of the photo, and should have a different level of reflectivity than the rest of the surface. A preprint will blend right in with the surface because it's underneath the surface gloss.

If the signatures are hand signed. Find signatures on line that have been properly authenticated, and compare them to yours. If you feel comfortable that they are authentic then proceed to have them authenticated by a reputable company.

An autograph that is not authenticated by a creditable company could sell at half the price or less than one that is. Two of the top, and most trusted authenticators are PSA/DNA, and James Spence Authentic (JSA). Collectors will pay more for signatures authenticated by either one. It may sound odd but in some cases PSA/DNA, and JSA authenticated signatures may sell higher than a Letter of authenticity from an unknown or less trusted authenticator that witnessed the signing even though PSA/DNA, and JSA did not. It's just a matter of collectors trust, and collectors will pay more for it.

Check the respective websites Show Schedule to see if they will be in the area that you live. They also do business through the mail. But before spending money on having the autograph authenticated do your homework, and compare the signatures.

For more information on Facsimile signatures I will leave a link below. I will also leave a link to Babe Ruth, and Lou Gehrig signatures for comparison.

You will just need to try it with some sample photos. Maybe someone else will be able to explain what the deciding factors are.

What does the mm mean on a camera lens?

The "mm" marking represents the focal length of the lens as measured from the optical center of the lens to the film plane when the lens is focused at infinity. If the lens is a zoom, focal length is expressed as a range such as 28 - 80mm, which means it can be infinitely varied from one length to the other. Most zoom lenses accomplish this in part by varying the position of the optical center. The focal length or zoom range is typically indicated on the lens barrel and/or the area surrounding the front lens element.

Lenses that accept accessory filters are almost never marked with a filter diameter or series size on the lens, though screw-in filters have the diameter indicated in millimeters on the filter rim. Since many lenses are stored with a filter in place, this might easily be mistaken for a part of the lens itself, particularly with screw-in filters, which normally sit flush with the front diameter of the lens barrel.
