Are there mosquitoes in cape verde?

The only mosquitoes in Cape Verde are on the island of Santiago, and even then they are only around during a few months in the Summer. The holiday islands of Sal and Boa Vista are too hot and dry for them to survive. It is extremely unlikely that you will see mosquitoes here and even if you do they are unlikely to carry malaria.

You should always visit a doctor before you travel to ensure your immunisations are up to date. They should be able to tell you whether the Cape Verde islands are a Malaria risk.

The current issue Cape Verde banknotes are printed by De La Rue of England and have most of the modern security features;

* Embedded metallised security thread.

* Watermark of Amílcar Cabral (political activist).

* Multiple Colour Intaglio printing, giving the images a raised texture.

* Guilloché patterning, impossible to photocopy or photograph with any accuracy.

* Duplicate serial numbers on the obverse, one horizontal in black ink and one vertical in red ink. Each successive digit of the serial number is slightly larger.

Unusually, the obverse of the 200 Escudos note is in standard landscape format, but the back is portrait. This is not repeated on other CVE notes. Both faces of the 1999/2000 issue 2000 and 5000 Escudo notes are portrait, whilst the 500 and 1000 Escudos are normal landscape designs.

Is cape verde a nice holiday destination?

It depends what you are after. There are two holiday islands that cater for tourists - Sal and Boa Vista (and Santiago soon, hopefully). Sal and Boa Vista are hot a dry, literally desert islands. If you like beaches then these are the places to head for (particularly Boa Vista).

In terms of things to do it is not really an adventure holiday place. It is more a place for relaxing and doing gentle exploring. Sal has more to offer in this respect than Boa Vista. In Sal you can do diving, fishing, windsurfing, quad biking around the island and explore the endless beaches.

Boa Vista is the quieter neighbour of Sal but the beaches are spectacular. It has little choice of hotels at the moment, but if you want to get away from the crowds than this is the place to go. Again, the tourist industry is still in it's infancy so there is not much in the way of excursions. You can however go quad biking over the dunes and catch a flight to Sal and some of the other Cape Verde Islands if you want to explore.

The weather is hot all year round (for both islands) and even in the winter months it is hot and sunny. The sea is generally a few degrees warmer than the Canaries all year round. It is worth bearing in mind that Sal and Boa Vista during January and February there is a strong breeze that can get bothersome on the beach during the day and a little nippy at night. The rest of the year this breeze is a welcome visitor.

Other plus points: No malaria - the climate is too harsh for mosquitoes to survive, Only 5.5 hours flying time from the UK and its on the same latitude as the Caribbean with the weather to match, no jet lag - they are only 1 hour behind the UK, very friendly people, a great place to visit if you want a new destination.

Down sides: Not much choice of accommodation, not a holiday for those who like sightseeing. Best visit the islands between March and November for the best weather.
