If your fish are swimming up to the surface and gasping for air it a sure sign that there is not enough oxygen in the tank; another sign may be an increased flaring of the gills. How do you set up a fish bowl?

I will asume this is for a goldfish or a beta. If it is some other kind if fish it may need filteratin, areation or circulating water, so make sure it will be okay in a bowl rather than an Aquarium. first you need a bowl, some aquarium rocks or marbles for substrate (to cover the bottom of the bowl) chlorine free water. and whatever decorative items you want (plants of some kind of figurine. this is not a necesity) Put the rocks in the bottom of the bowl, an inch or a half inch deep. Put in the deccorations if you have some. Now for the water, you can't just use water streight from the tap because tap water has chemicals (like chlorine ) in it so nothing can live in it, including fish. There are a number of options here. You can set the water out in an open container for 24 hours and the chlorine will simply evaporate, leaving it safe for your fish. You can buy drops that remove chlorine from the water instantly, or you can buy bottled water (make sure that it is pure water and chemical free). Now you need to add ther fish. it is important that the temprature of the water the fish comes home in be aproximately the same as the water in the bowl, so don't just dump him streight in. If the bowl is large enough, flote the bag with the fish in it in the top of the bowl for about 15 minutes before putting him in the bowl. if not set it beside the bowl for 15 minutes the result will be aproximately the same. one more thing. when you buy the fish, make sure you also ger the apropriate food for it. the bowl will need to be cleaned frequently, once a week to once a month depending on the type and number of fish and the size if the bowl. Just catch the fish and put them, with some of their water into another container, dump the rest of the water, rinse the bowl and rocks with plain tap water. DO NOT USE SOAP!!!! and put it all back together.

Could I introduce another Oscar into my tank?

Oscars grow relatively large, aggressive and are messy fish. If there is sufficent room in the tank and the Oscars are of similar size it would be possible. Just feed current Oscar first, turn off the aquarium lights and perhaps rearrange the aquariums decorations as you add the next one. Fish are more passive when full, having the tank dark decreases stress on both fish to make the introduction easier and rearranging the tank decor will sometimes pacify some territorial fish.

Memory of a goldfish?

The thought that goldfish only have a memory of three seconds is false.

Studies show that a goldfish has a memory of a few months. Goldfish have been taught to go through mazes or do tricks. The simplest way to prove that a goldfish has a memory longer than three seconds is to observe what they do right before they are fed. They tend to congregate at the surface near the human that feeds them. Goldfish clearly remember (have a memory) that seeing a human often leads to being fed.
