What does the Celtic flag mean?
The most known pan-celtic flag was created by Robert Berthelier, from Brittany, in the 50's. It is made of a green field charged with two yellow interlaced triskells, the first of them symbolizing the Gaelic countries (Scotland, Man, Ireland) and the second of them symbolizing the Brittonic countries (Wales, Cornwall, Brittany). The triskells are inscribed in a yellow Celtic circle, which has been used by the Celts as a rallying sign since the beginning of the century. Green symbolizes both freedom and the sea.
Purple is also often used, as the colour of heather, the emblem plant of the Celts. On 23 August 1901, during its first meeting held in Dublin, the Celtic Congress unanimously adopted the heather as the Celtic flower.
It was many different reasons, one reason was that they used it to intimidate the romans. Second is because they weren't as rich as the Romans as the romans were richer they could afford armour and better weapons. With this in mind the Celts also owned less land and weren't fighting to take land, but to simply protect it. Futher reasons are that it is more practical without armour because armour weighs quite alot. They mainly lived in Ireland and Scotland.

How did Picts make blue war paint?
The ancients made a very good blue dye from the plant woad.
To achieve the dye, the aerial parts (above ground: leaves, flowers and stems) of the plant were finely chopped and packed tightly into a wide mouthed container.
Boiling water was added until the plant material was completely covered and the container was set aside for about an hour. Then the infusion (liquid) was strained off.
At this point lye was added and the mixture was beaten with a whisk or similar implement for about fifteen minutes or so and the mixture would have been set aside to settle.
Every day or so, any of the clear or very pale liquid that rose to the surface was poured off, until the remaining liquid was very thick and very dark.
This concentrated liquid was poured into a wide pan and slowly evaporated off.
The resulting dye was a dark blue powder that was usually mixed with animal fat to make a blue body paint.
Please NOTE This process was messy and the dye was permanent, so those making the dye carried the stains for quite a while.
