What was new York like in the 1700s?

In the 1700s, immigrants were coming from all over the world. The second and third waves of Irish immigrants came after 1717. The potato famine in Ireland was making them want to come. Many immigrants thought that they would strike it rich in this new land. Ellis Island and Angel Island dealt with immigrants. Immigrants were inspected, but it was rare for one not to be accepted. If an immigrant was sick, they were sent to the Ellis Island hospital at Ellis Island. It was rare for one of the immigrants to get sent home. Angel Island was used mainly by Asians and Ellis Island by Europeans. Ellis Island was closed in 1954. It was expensive to maintain. Today, Ellis Island is a tourist sight. From Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty can be seen. The Statue of Liberty was a significant sight for the immigrants crossing over to the U.S. Many of them cried on the boats. The boats treated the immigrants as cargo, and the immigrants were usually steerage. Depending on where the immigrants were traveling from, the journeys were long. Many people got sick and conditions were terrible.

What were some names in the 1700s?

If it happens in the British Colonies of North America, you'll find primarily Biblical names: Samuel, Christian, John, Nathaniel, Daniel, Thomas, Caleb and Jacob for men, and Rachel, Hannah, Mary for the women. Popular Dutch names are Abraham, Johannes, Gerrit, Hendrick, Huybert, with Maritje, Grietje, Annetje, and Margrietje for the women.

These are based on my 18th Century trees. For sheer frequency, you can't go wrong with Hannah or Rachel.

Who was a boxer in the 1700s?

be much easier to find boxers of the future, you know... How about Daniel Mendoza (1764-1836). he has a facinating life story/ though he died penniless left his wife and 11 children stranded (spent time in Debtors prison, too...). Mendoza was the all time smallest heavyweight at only 160 lbs. He is considered to be the originator of Modern Boxing. He was the most celebrated Jewish athlete of his time and the 16th (world) (England) champion. He was born on July 5, 1764 and is reputed to be of Spanish noble decent. He was brought up in the very tough West End of London (at least 20 major Jewish fighters grew up there). His was a time of bare knuckle boxing when the rest was 1/2 what it is now. A Richard Humphreys helped get him started and then became a main opponent and they fought three battles (Mendoza won twice after being stopped in their first meeting). The Prince of Wales took a likeing to Mendoza and became his Patron. This certainly futhered his career. Mendoza is considered a Hero in Jewish history. Not only was he a great boxer of his time but also he countered many Stereotypes of that time period.. "Daniel Mendoza" Encyclopedia of world Biography.
