Who were the gray Nuns and what did they do?

Grey Nuns is the name given by the laity to the Sisters of Charity, throughout the world, but especially in North America, France, and Germany. The Grey Nuns of Charity in America were founded in 1737 at Montreal, Canada by St. Marie Marguerite d' Youville (1701-1771), she was the first native Canadian saint and was canonized in 1990 by Pope John Paul II.

The Grey Nuns began as a tiny community of lay sisters devoted to caring for the sick. They received the regula (rule) eight years later which was approved by the local bishop in 1754 and by Pope Leo XIII in 1880. The order spread throughout North America with several congregations being formed in the 1800's, especially the Grey Nuns of the Cross, officially, Sisters of Charity of Ottawa in 1845; the Sisters of Charity of Quebec in 1849; and the Sisters of Charity of Hyacinthe in 1840. Each of these orders moved into the US in the late 1800's and are still active in health care and hospital work.
