Charlemagne

Charlemagne's name was Karl, or Charles. There are a number of spellings; it was Latinized to Carolus or Karolus. The English name for him, Charlemagne is derived from French, and means Charles the Great.

He is regarded by many people as the greatest king of the Middle Ages, and an ideal monarch.

Charlemagne was crowned Emperor of the Roman People on December 25, 800 AD, by Pope Leo III, in St. Peter's Basilica, in Rome. His empire, however, is not usually considered the same as the Holy Roman Empire.

Today, the empire of which he was crowned is usually called the Carolingian Empire. In the past, historians sometimes equated the Holy Roman Empire with the Carolingian Empire. Today, they are less likely to do that, and most commonly the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire is counted as Otto I. According to this newer view, the Holy Roman Empire was not equal to the Carolingian Empire, but descended from it.

I should point out that the facts of events are not being disputed, but rather what names should be used. Medieval people did not use the name Holy Roman Empire until long after both Charlemagne and Otto I were gone, and they never used the name Carolingian Empire at all.

Charlemagne (Latin for Charles the Great) was king of much of Europe from 768 until 814. He was one of the greatest of the medieval kings. He conquered much of Western Europe, and created an empire that include nearly all of present day France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland, and large parts of Austria and Italy. This was the largest country in Western Europe in the whole of the Middle Ages. He was crowned Emperor of the West, on Christmas day, 800 AD.

He was a man who wanted to improve his kingdom, and to that end instituted a number of notable changes. One of great importance was seeing to it that the members of the nobility were educated. He had good relations with the Church and protected the pope.

I would say Charlemagne does deserve to be called great. He was a very important positive influence in the history of Europe, and a great patron of arts and learning.

Others might disagree, so do some research and decide for yourself.

In 772 he launched a 30-year military campaign to bring order to the empire. Charlemagne restored much of the unity.

Charlemagne was born about 742 AD, in the city of Liège, which is now in Belgium. He inherited his throne from his father, Pepin the Short.

Charlemagne is not known for being a composer. It is possible Charlemagne composed some music during his lifetime, but I have found no reference to it.

Several items were significant ; number 1 he was the first Holy Roman Emporer crowned by the Catholic Church; but most important in my mind he also stopped the spread of Islam from Spain as he turned the Arabs/Berbers away from central Europe otherwise we would all be Islamic instead of of Christian.

Yes, there are many inventions that have not been created yet. Some potential areas for new inventions include sustainable technologies, advancements in healthcare, space exploration, and artificial intelligence. The possibilities for invention are virtually endless as technology continues to evolve.
