Why do people like chess?

In my opinion, it is because the game involves mental as opposed to physical skill and ability. There are no advatages that a difference in physical size gives to one person over another. In fact, beating an opponent usin brains rather than brawn is much more satisfying than the other way around. What little player would not love beating another player that is twice his size. Also, as people play more and more they see that there are basic concepts concerning strategies and tactics that govern the game and that these can be learned and mastered. Getting better at something is always a reward in and of itself.

Makes me laugh to hear people say it would feel good to beat someone in chess who is twice their size, for me this would never cross my mind in relation to the game. Chess, its a very in-depth game, in that the more you play the more you see, you can never really know the game. You constantly create new combination's and see new patterns. When you first start playing you may make stupid mistakes but if you play for long enough, eventually you will begin not even to have to think about these small mistakes they will be in your sub conscience mind as your brain is thinking more about the overall game plan (strategy) rather than combination's and patterns which would come more so under tactics. If you play for too much like I used to when younger, you may actually dream about chess patterns and invent them in your sleep, developing with the game is quite amazing, this power it has to grasp your 100% attention can be pretty special. And a great thing about the game in more advanced levels is that the outcome of the game is purely skill, which is great and has nothing to do with luck, except certain circumstances of course. LOL why would you bother talking about physical and mental when it comes to chess?? hhahah this is a board game, like saying this is a 'word'.

Can kings in chess put other kings in check if the other king is two spaces away?

No

The rules state that one may never place his own King in check.

Because a King can only move one square, it must be adjacent to a piece in order to attack it.

But the act of moving your King adjacent to your opponent's King would be putting it in check.

And so the move is not allowed.

If your King is two squares away from your opponent's King, it is not attacking it, and thus it is not putting the other King in check.

Which square is B3 on a chess board?

Picture the board in front of you. On the extreme left in the corner closest to you is the square A1. Move one square to the right and up to the third square from there you will find B3. The lines of squares going up and down are called files and are designated A to H beginning on the left and moving to the right. The lines of squares going horizontally are numbered 1 to 8 again moving from left to right. Thus, the square directly diagonally across the board from A1 up to the square on the extreme right and all the way up to the opponent's side is called H8.

The best chess tactics and strategies?

In a king pawn opening (with white), use openings that attack the opponent's king pawn on e5, e.x. Scotch, Spanish, King's Gambit, Goldreng Gambit, or the Ponziani openings. With black, defend your e5 pawn the best you can with reasonable moves, or play the French, Russian, or the Sicilian.

With the queen pawn opening, I highly recommend the Queen's Gambit for white, and to defend against it, accept the gambit and prevent the opponent from gaining effective tempo and castle queen-side, or decline with the move e6 and later castle king-side. In the middle game, get your pieces to the best positions possible and with like pieces/ with supportive pieces. In the endgame, center the king and attempt to promote the pawns remaining while avoiding checkmate and attempting checkmate.
