How often should you chang a chinchillas dust bath?

It depends.

Large cages once every week, unless there are more than one hamster, then every other day.

Small cages every other day, and there should only be one hamster in a small cage.

If the hamster is in mating season you might want to clean them out more often, as the smell is worse and they urinate more.

Also, bigger hamster will urinate more, keep that in mind. :)

How long should baby chinchillas stay with their mother?

For 6 weeks. They should stay with "mum" until they are from 8 to 10 weeks old. It usual for the kits to stay at the breeders until they are 12 or 14 weeks (4 months for some breeders). Staying at the same location on the same feed is better for the kit's well being. Kits caged apart from their mother will "talk" to her for reasurance.

Do chinchillas have tails?

Reason why other mammals have tails... to look cute!

I'm just kidding.

It's to keep their balance.

Flip one upside down... see what it does with its tail.

It waves it around for balance.

How do you pick up a chinchillas?

When you are picking up a chinchilla, NEVER pick them up by the middle. Their ribs are very brittle and thin and are extremely easy to break. You need to pick up the chin by the base of the tail. Make sure you are grabbing as close to its rear-end as possible. It does not hurt the chinchilla to grab it by the tail and you won't be able to pull it out.

NO! Do not grab it by the tail. Scoop it up with your hands and if it doesn't want to be scooped up then it does not want to be scooped and it will remain that way.

Is a chinchilla a good pet for kids?

Chinchillas make good pets if You or your family has:

1 a cat, large snake and/or large lizard.

2 enjoy having your fingers bitten into or off.

3 enjoy having a home that smells discusting day and night.

^That is NOT it.

Chinchillas are good for people with allergies.

They do NOT smell but are active at night and need to be played with.

They don't bite only nibble so they can get to know you and only bite when feeling threatened. But chinchillas are delicate and exotic and get sick easily and need to be taken care of ALOT and have to be fed and played with on a daily basis. You should research about them and find out about diseases they can get or the hair ring problem on males so you may have to help your kids on that one. So if you have a vet near by just in case and they treat chinchillas and your kids are very responsible and you will be able to help them if theres a problem then I think its a great idea! Also keep in mind chinchillas are known to sometimes live 20+ years so you would have to keep this animal happy and healthy for its entire life! Also females and sometimes males can get aggressive and sometimes don't like to be picked up or cuddled.

Do chinchillas spray you with urine?

Chinchillas originate come from the Andes Mountains of South America. Nowadays, they are rarely found in their natural habitat apart from Northern Chile. Humans hunted chinchillas almost to extinction, both short-tailed and long-tailed, for their thick, valuable fur. These days, it is considered a protected animal, and due to this fact their population started to grow considerably.

What causes chinchillas to lose their fur?

If a chinchilla is stressed out they will lose their fur.

Do chinchillas and guinea pigs get along?

They usually don't really care about each other. They are not going to fight, but they won't do as a companion for each other. So you should not keep only one guinea pig and one chinchilla together. Also, they need different kinds of cages.

Can a chinchilla eat guinea pig food?

yes it can, before you run out of the chinchilla food make sure you put a little of food in the chinchilla's bowl and mix it in with the little of the chinchilla food and that's it then you can feed it the food

Why has your chinchilla started kicking food out of her dish?

They do it accidentally, so get a heavy bowl.

But sometimes, it does it with purpose.

The one I have, when it got spoiled, grabbed his bowl and threw it down from cage 3rd floor and emptied the contents of the bowl when it wanted a treat. I got extremely pissed and did not give it anything until it ate up the food that lay on the floor. Now it's not spoiled anymore... LOL

Can chinchillas live in glass cages?

Yes chinchillas can live in grass cages, but i prefer that you don't put them in grass cages because if you use the grass from the ground they could have all different bacteria on it. To make sure check with your veternarian or your local pet store.

Hope this helps!

How many babies do chinchillas normally have in a litter?

A Chinchilla cat usually has about 4 kittens in a litter although may have up to 8 or even more but that is unusual. Like most other domestic cats Chinchillas can have two or three litters a year. Long-haired cats like Chinchillas are prone to polycystic kidney disease and an affected kitten may not survive more than a few weeks. Responsible breeders are now testing for this condition.

Can you put two chinchillaS together?

No. Most male animals don't live well together.

Can chinchilla share a cage with a guinea pig?

No. Guinea pigs need a different environment from chinchillas. It would be best to house them in different places. If your guinea pig/chinchilla are lonely put their cages opposite each other.

Is the chinchilla endangared?

Wild chinchillas lived in a fairly small area of South America. Loss of habitat to development and being hunted for their fur has made them in danger of extinction. This does not apply to farm raised chinchillas that are raised for their fur.

Can chinchillas eat rose petals?

Actually rose petals are healthy for your guinea to eat. Pet stores like Petsmart and Petco sell a brand called Kaytee, they have rose petals and rose buds in some of their products and they also have a treat that is nothing but rose petals. I wouldn't recommend picking roses unless you are positive that they have not been sprayed with pesticides. Always consult a vet before taking the choice to feed from items outside, sometimes cars can cause nasty pollutions to your plants and they could potentially be harmful.
