It depends.

Large cages once every week, unless there are more than one hamster, then every other day.

Small cages every other day, and there should only be one hamster in a small cage.

If the hamster is in mating season you might want to clean them out more often, as the smell is worse and they urinate more.

Also, bigger hamster will urinate more, keep that in mind. :)

When you are picking up a chinchilla, NEVER pick them up by the middle. Their ribs are very brittle and thin and are extremely easy to break. You need to pick up the chin by the base of the tail. Yes chinchillas can live in grass cages, but i prefer that you don't put them in grass cages because if you use the grass from the ground they could have all different bacteria on it. To make sure check with your veternarian or your local pet store.
