How do you stop your gerbil from tipping over his food bowl?
If the bowl is heavy, your gerbil should find it difficult to tip it over. I suggest a china bowl. If this doesn't stop him, try gluing the bowl to the floor.
We tend to just feed our gerbils (mind you we own over 40 gerbils and own many champion gerbils) on the ground. The food will get buried, but it lets the gerbils forage for there food and therefore simulates a natural habitate.
My way might be a bit expensive but it works. I have a plastic cage from pets at home and it has a special hole at the top of the cage. The food bowl slots into it and it therefore impossible for it to get tipped over.

Do chinchillas have predators or prey?
Yes. There main predators are foxes and man but owls, cougars and even mountain lions prey on chinchillas too.
It depends on the Chinchilla - those handled more from birth and raised properly will be more comfortable with you touching them; the more time you put into getting to know them, the more they will let you play with them!
Do remember though, Chinchillas are very sensitive to germs and you must always wash your hands before and after handling them - any grease and oils on your hands will damage their coats too.

How does a chinchilla protect itself?
biting
Chinchillas can jump up to 5 feet in the air to get away from a predator.
Also if a predator gets a hold of them they can do this thing called a fur slip which is where they loose a patch of fur voluntarily and with out hurting themselves to cause the predators grip to slip. Also they spray the animal with a very nasty smelling substance. Biting is a last resort but can be affective. They can also use intimidation, by puffing themselves up and bark as loud as they can to try and scare the predator away.

How old does a chinchilla have to be to have babies?

Giving birth to one baby takes about one to three minutes. Actually, usually less. In between each baby, there is about five to six minutes while the mommy licks her baby clean.
Should you get a bunny or a chinchilla?
It depends as always to if they are the right pet for you. There are pros and cons. First off, keep in mind that chinchillas can live as long as 15 years. They are not a responsibility to take lightly; they are a commitment, just like a dog or a cat. You will need to be ready to dedicate a fair amount of time and money to these animals for their cage, food, chews, and the cost of the animal themselves (they can be anywhere from $50-$200).
As far as supplies go, they need a fairly large cage (the size of a ferret cage) and it's best to also have a large wheel in order for them to be able to move around and get the exercise they need. You've also got to provide lots of toys for chewing and stimulation. Rodents' teeth need to be constantly worn down by chewing so wooden chews and other toys are a must (otherwise teeth can become malformed and overgrown so much that the chinchilla may no longer be able to eat). Chinchillas also use a type of volcanic ash dust to take baths in which can be somewhat messy and may aggravate allergies. In addition, you've got to provide a proper diet of alfalfa based pellets and timothy hay. Hay sometimes aggravates allergies as well. Most people are not allergic to chinchillas themselves, but by their supplies.
Chinchillas have a few special needs: They cannot drink tap water because they risk contracting giarrdia (a water-born parasite) and can only drink bottled or filtered water. They also have somewhat sensitive digestive systems and cannot be fed overly sugary food (with lots of fruit and corn). A strict diet of alfalfa pellets and timothy hay is recommended.
The pros are that chinchillas are a very unique pet and live longer than most rodents if you want to be able to have a lasting bond with an animal but cannot have a dog or cat. They have very luxurious, extremely soft fur, and are very curious and fairly intelligent. They are very quiet (unless they are running on a loud wheel). A special thing about them is that they cannot get fleas or ticks because of the density of their fur. They are very fun to watch and bond with. Not to mention they are very cute.
Do your research online at forums such as www.chins-n-quills.com. Books are usually outdated and provide false information.

What is a chinchilla called in french?
the name of the chipmunk in French is 'un tamia / un tamia rayé / un tamia striatus'. Now I would be surprised if anybody I know, actually knows that name. (the name chipmunk will be more quickly understood, thanks to the movies)
Why did your chinchilla quit eating?
Could be many reasons;
1) The chinchilla has a tooth problem which is causing eating to be painful commonly with its cheek teeth that you can't see without an x-ray- take the chinchilla to the vets.
2) Your chinchilla is very pregnant and about to have babies, it will start eating very soon or if you temp it with a rasin.
3)Your chinchilla has problem with it's intestines and needs to see a vet.
Other reasons also exist but generally a chinchilla that doesn't eat for a few days needs to see the vet. Their are lots of microorganisms that live in a chinchillas gut and the complex ballance may be lost if the chinchilla doesn't keep eating.
I know fruit bearing chestnut trees are far and few anymore, but we do happen to have one that produces so many chestnuts that 3 families run out of ideas on how to use. I was curious if I could give my Chinchilla a chestnut treat maybe every other week. I know the chestnut wood is not good for them, but what about the chestnut itself, which isn't a very sugary nut?
What are the threats of a chinchilla?
The overall numbers of this subspecies are probably stable in the absence of any known threats. Although the known range in British Columbia is very small, there are no apparent direct threats. Logging is a potential long-term threat, but as long as abundant coarse woody debris remains, chipmunks may thrive in logged areas.
The chinchilla is a native of the Andes Mountains in South America. And you can find them in homes everywhere.
How big should a chinchilla cage be?
Chinchillas are one of the larger and more energetic of the rodent family so need a large cage about 150cm high and about 75cm wide, this size is best for one-two chinchillas. The cage must have wire sides and a slide out plastic or metal tray is a great bonus!
What impact do chinchillas have on humans?
